How do I know what kind of quill stem I need for my steerer tube

Hey guys, I noticed there are a couple of kinds of quill stems. Does it matter which one I use?

versus

(Wedge)

Thanks!

Cone versus wedge only matters in rare cases of smaller frames. If the steer tube is short and internally reinforced at teh fork crown, a wedge might be blocked from getting enough insertion, and you'd need a cone. Other than that, stem/steer compatibility is just diameter - French frames need a 22.0 mm diameter, and others if they take a quill need 22.2 mm. The 26.0 you see is the diameter of the handlebar clamp, and has nothing to do with the steer tube.

+1 Cinelli warning is all about handlebar diameter. Invest in a $10 digital caliper and measure your bars.

Old Schwinns and really old Nishikis came with smaller BMX sized stems (21mm). What bike do you have?

As said above there are clamp/handlebar size issues to consider as well as the ID of the steerer tube (the vast majority being 22.2mm). In my opinion, expander nuts suck. It's an inferior design as compared to the wedge. Also, some of those Cinellis came with aluminum stem bolts, which is also a poor place to try and save weight.
