chain help

chain help
i just restored my 1979 schwinn traveller 3 ,everything is fine except the chain gets stuck at the point where it leaves the sprocket ,this happnes when its on the smaller sprocket with any combination of rear derailer ring.The big sprocket moves only with the smallest derailer casette ring(sorry i dont know what its called), what could be the problem ? according to me its the smaller sprocket because the chain get stuck between the two sprockets only at the point where it leaves the sprocket, i may have installed it the other way around ,can that happen or it doesnt matter which way you install it, or is it possible that i have tightened it a bit too much?i checked all the spacers and washers between the sprockets everything seems fine

There is no way to give a good answer without a clearer explanation and pics.
Having said that and assuming you have everything assembled correctly; I think your chain is worn out or you bought a chain too narrow for your bike. You need a basic multi-speed chain from Walmart. They are cheap and they work well. If that's not it, your rear cluster may be worn out and need replacing.
Hope that helps. Try to get some pics up and maybe some of the resident experts can decipher your problem.

First off, let's call the sprockets on the crank rings and the sprockets on the freewheel cogs. That will eliminate a lot of confusion.
So, using that terminology, is the chain getting stuck when it leaves the small ring or the small cog? I would be surprised if it were the small ring.
If it is the small cog, it is most likely that your small cog is to close to the drive side chain stay. Did you do anything to the wheel hub or did you change from a five cog freewheel to a six cog one?
Of course, I am basing my attempt to help on your description and it is somewhat confusing. As others have suggested, good clear pictures often times produce much better answers from the members of the forum.

Sounds almost like the OP may be referring to the jockey wheels on his rear derailleur to me. And the chain may be ran threw it wrong. We're really gonna need some pics of this one. You could do well to find some pictures (of a similar bike that's working) as well, to see how the chain and derailleur should be set up.
