Need help tracking down some parts
 

Hello,

I'm working on a 650b Schwinn World Tourist conversion/transformation for my fiancee. This bike is the women's version step-through frame and came with four black plastic cable clamps which attach to the downtube and chainstay used to route the rear derailleur cable.

I no longer have a rear derailleur on this bike, but I do have a Sturmey-Archer hub laced to the rear wheel, and while the black plastic clamps work fine they don't really match the aesthetics of the rest of the bike. I have seen pictures via Google search that show some of these bikes with chrome clamps which are exactly what I want.

I've searched and searched but can't seem to find any of the chrome ones for sale anywhere. I am aware of the "dia-compe cable guides" but those would only work for the downtube and not the chainstay as the size of the chainstay tapers smaller from front to back, and thus the clamps are different diameters. The next best idea I have is to paint the plastic ones I have chrome or silver.

Any help is much appreciated!

Couple things:

1) Is the one on the downtube a double guide (cable each side of the tube) or a single?
2) Can you measure the diameters approximately on the chainstay?
3) I'm assuming you're looking for the downtube clamp and the two on the chainstay as pictured in the image you provided?

I have a co-op with a drawer full of cable routes, I'm sure I could find what you need.

1) The downtube clamps I have are double cable and the chainstays are single cable. I need single cable downtube clamps now.
2) Downtube is 29mm, Chainstay is 21mm & 17mm as measured with cheap digital calipers. These are the bike measurments, not the clamp measurements.
3) I need two downtube clamps and the two differently sized chainstay clamps.

Gotcha...chance I might be able to get there today even, if not Monday perhaps. I'll see what I can find. If I find some a bit big you willing to pad with a bit of cut up old tube?

That would be great. And yeah, I don't mind using a little tubing to shim them if they are a tad large. That would probably be better for the paint anyhow!

It doesn't. This bike originally came with the Shimano Positron shifting system and Front Freewheeling crank. When we got this bike I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I had just started into the bike hobby and we just wanted a vintage bike for the girlfriend. Little did I know you could not just replace busted cables on the Positron system with modern bike cables. Actually the whole bike was in worse shape than I knew, but I knew much much less then than I do now. We really overpaid for it ($75). Long story short, the whole drive train got replaced. I have a Sugino RD2 crank on there now with a Velo Orange Grand Cru Bottom Bracket and the SA S-RF3 hub in the rear. I'm pretty pleased where it has come, just a lot of $$$ but a lot of fun. Between this and the Salsa Vaya frameset I built up for myself I have learned soooooooooooooo much.

I really dig the Kermit the frog green color!
What are you doing for brakes? Fenders?

This is a 27" to 650b conversion, so I had to get extra long reach calipers. I tried Dia-Compe 750s, but they were a hair too short so I broke down and picked up a pair of Mafac "RAID"s off eBay where the seller accepted my best offer of $120. Still a ridiculous price, but I'm too deep into the project now to quit due to brake unavailability.

Thanks for the compliment on the color. My fiancee is an interior architect and she picked the color scheme. We had the bike painted May Green [RAL# 6017] and the fenders, which are not pictured, Cream [RAL# 9001]. Unfortunately the cream Grand Boise Hetres are just a little too fat for the original 27" fenders so I have a pair of 650b Velo Orange fenders on way which she thinks she wants to leave silver. We also have a matching May Green rear rack and front basket that will go on the bike, and I think at some point she plans to cut a custom wood shelf to go on the rack.

You actually did well on the Mafac RAIDs (but I understand how you feel!)

I'm also trying to find a 130 BCD 5 bolt chainring guard that would fit the aesthetics of the bike if anyone has some suggestions.

Found you some clips...for the chainstay, couldn't find anything nice for the downtube, I did get some metal clips for you but probably not a permanant solution.

You could use a Sturmey Archer fulcrum clip on the down tube and a pulley at the bottom of the seat tube. Both are readily available.
