Maillard brand rear hubs, or so that is my assumption...
I've got a 74' Raleigh Grand Prix 10 speed, freewheel style rear hub w/quick release hollow axle. The problem is...upon servicing the hubs, I found significant wear on the cone and cup and two of nine balls missing (or disintegrated) within, on the freewheel side only. I've cleaned, repacked and replaced the bearings but I (of course) still have the worn cone and cup.
I think it's just a matter of time before I'll have issues with the hub (bearings) again, which brings up my questions.
1. Are the hub cups (races) replaceable? I'm under the impression that only a replacement hub may suffice / provide the cups. I find that odd, as at some point, hardened (separate) cups were at least factory installed. I've sourced the cones and axle on-line FWIW.
2. Doing some research I assume they are Maillard's. Can provide pics if needed. Are there ID marking locations somewhere peculiar to Maillard hubs? There aren't any apparent part numbers visible is why I ask, or maybe I'm not looking in the correct place.
3. From experience, what is the expected ride / life span of worn hubs as detailed?
4. Just FYI...I've got my eyes open for a whole rear wheel assembly too. This bike boom ear bike of mine (numbers wise) SHOULD provide a decent bounty of used parts.
I should also add, that this bike is new to me and I have NO idea how long the bearing issue has persisted, although there are signs that maintenance was lacking in general on an apparently (otherwise looking) low mileage bike.
Currently the hub and bearings are set-up with no apparent play and it "rolls" well with an ever so slight intermittent vibe / roughness felt when holding the bike by its frame and spinning the rear wheel by hand. This is after an initial 15 minute test ride / bearing replacement only.

You can just keep riding on that same wheel for a while, a little roughness is no a big deal. On some hubs you can replace the races but on that one it's not worth the hassle. Keep an eye out for a new hub/wheel (which should be easy and cheap to locate) in the meantime.
