Share your Trexlertown, PA Fall Swap experience

I know some of you have some cool new projects and pickups. I have one too that I'll post when I get some time for pics later.

Or maybe just tell us how your day went.

fender1 10-02-11 07:58 AM

Well, I wasn't able to make it to the swap due to family stuff and then the post-swap ride was cancelled after I had loaded my bike on the car to attend. Then I went to an Irish bar and listened to music and drank Guinness. Not too bad.......

-holiday76 10-02-11 10:27 AM

I was mainly selling the entire day, but towards the end I happened to nice this Motobecane Jubile Sport, complete minus seat post and saddle and managed to grab it for $50. it's my size.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-R...1000003155.JPG

It's an 81 and looks like it was barely ridden. Seems mostly original.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-P...1000003158.JPG

paint and decals are perfect save for one spot on the decal that I might have actually done when I put it on the rack the bring it home.

It's got weird nutted hubs , but that looks very nice quality and are light, laced to nice rigida alloy rims.

you can see where i scratched the decal here. oops/

suntour stuff on it.

as you can see its missing the headbadge too. This thing looks like it was never ridden.

It's the lowest end of the lighweight moto racing bikes for 1981/

Cool, and the seat post isn't stuck:rolleyes:

ColonelJLloyd 10-02-11 01:17 PM

Nice score, Brian. Are those Suntour mechs? They look a lot like Shimano Altus, but I'm viewing this on my phone.

"designed for the new converts to the cycling lifestyle"

might just be what you need to get you into bikes!

Citoyen du Monde 10-02-11 02:01 PM

I behaved myself. I didn't walk around until the very end and instead stuck to selling things. Two fewer boxes of clothing and a pocket full of money!!! Yeah!

I got a few interesting things...

Junkyard sold me some very cool tubular rims I plan on building up...
Tom generously gave me a set of axciom panniers that he toured France with...
Dura Ace 25.0 (???) aero seatpost. What is that diameter?!?
Brooks sprung saddle...leather is damaged, but I might have it redone or use the rails for a new hide.
Two VERY nice Treks...one sold to another member, one sold this morning but the buyer is bringing it back. I TOLD him it was too small for him!
A bike I won't mention and haven't decided what to do with.
Some SPDs.
A bunch of tubes.

And, most importantly, camaraderie.

Hmmmm.. That " unmentionable " might be the score of the year Aaron. Thanks for the help
earlier in the day! I hope you did as well as I did.

I had a great time!

I sold my 1940 Schwinn New World and am very happy about that.

Then I bought a pair of Campy Record hubs, large flange, no QR's, for $20.

Then I bought a Campy Record hub, small flange rear, with most of a QR (wrong nut) for $0.50.

Then I bought a beat-to-heck leather saddle for $4, a poor Brooks B17 from the 60s for $10, and Campy bar end shifters for $40.

I looked at some beautiful bicycles. I did not buy them. I saw two Schwinn New Worlds, both newer than the one I'd just sold. Then I saw a sketchy looking POS that I couldn't take my eye off, and next thing you know I had bought a Raleigh Lenton Sports, complete, with an AW hub dated 1960, for $40. Apparently Rob had his eye on it, but apparently my eye roves faster than his. Or was it my feet. Well, my wallet hand is pretty quick (except in restaurants). Anyway... he has too many bikes. :innocent:

At this point I started trying really hard not to buy anything else. Ended up selling a few items, no big stacks of cash, and buying a couple pumps, a handlebar or two, a chromed stem....

I met some interesting old guys with funny facial hair and a beery smell who liked to talk about old bikes. I liked them. Good people. I got a couple of business cards. But I couldn't shake this feeling there was a good deal on the next table and I had to get away.

For some time, I am told, I was standing right next to KonAaron Snake, may even have conversed with him (I can't pay attention to everything), but no one introduced us. Humph!:notamused:

I'm pretty sure the bike I bought is this one, from 1951, the 1960 hub notwithstanding:

Johnny - I really like it...but when I mentioned keeping it, I got the death stare. I think I might sell a couple of others instead and keep "it". Thanks for the band help!! t's definitely a better fit for me than the Team Miyata and the Cyclops.

Rudi - I think they were worried that if I knew you were there, I'd buy up all the Suntour and SA hubs I could find and sell them to you in the parking lot :p

I asked a few people if you were around and somehow the connection was never made. I also tried to find Harvey from the CR list but seemed to have failed miserably.

Yuh! And there I was, waiting in the parking lot with my stash of Campy, and I didn't know who I was looking for!

That Trexlertown swap sure has more Campy than Sturmey Archer. Sheesh.

-holiday76 10-02-11 05:48 PM

I haven't been to other swaps to compare, but if you somehow turned the velodrome over and dumped out all of the MTb and post 1990ish parts there really wouldn't be that much left over. Maybe 40% of it is lightweight vintage bike parts?

You need to search the dumpster for the SAs :D

It fits many aluminum and carbon bonded frames with aluminum lugs (e.g. Vitus, Alan).

Thanks Junkyard...no wonder I'm unfamiliar with it.

Most of the guys with the nice vintage stuff are CR list members (with a few who also post here, but shall remain unnamed). I think the BF C&V crowd is a slightly younger contingent, and we basically buy the CR crowd's less valued stuff (they keep the good). On the flip side, they 'score' from us. If you read the list, you'll learn that one CR regular bought Tom's Sachs. I can't place all the names with faces, but it's pretty easy to spot most of them by their wares. I think VLW collecting and selling is a fairly incestuous affair. The stuff just moves in circles.

Here's a photo a CR list member posted of a trophy find:

Those panniers are nice. I'm sure you'll get some good use out of those once you clean them a bit! I think it is neat how folks are so generous with their advice and stuff on this forum.

So, you DID pick up that brown Raleigh Sports I saw earlier in the day, eh? I was wondering who snagged it! :p

It was great meeting you and your dad and a bunch of the other guys here on the forums that were hanging out.

Almost every time I post a bike locally a friend named Len, also into older steel, responds and usually suspects it's me by the ad. I'd say 1/4th of all CL ads I answer end up being his. Like you said...one circle.

Definitely not enough SA stuff!! I couldn't even get fulcrum or brake band clips. Go figure!

Makes it all the easier for Rudi and me to get the stuff on the cheap! I like cheap.

Vitus used 25 seatposts.
