Pondering a SBDU Raleigh Purchase Opportunity

I have the opportunity to buy what is apparently a late 70's SBDU Raleigh from a local bike co-op. I was there dropping off a Record and some wheels I was donating, when a guy comes in with a dark blue, lugged steel Raleigh to donate. I did a few double takes, thinking it was a Competition or Professional. I asked what they would do with it, and they said they'd give it a one over and decide whether to keep it for parts or sell it outright. I said I'd be interested in it if they did decide to sell. Well, they contacted me and offered it for $400 as it (missing seat and post, and in well ridden but not overly abused condition). They had done their homework and declared it a 1978 SBDU Ilkeston 753 Raleigh Team pro. I haven't had a chance to go back and give it a thorough going through, (thus no pics, sorry). It looks like this, if my memory serves me right:
https://radpropaganda.org/wp-content/...gh753-1978.jpg

What should I be looking for in terms of identification and original components etc on such a bike? I'm quite a newbie to vintage Raleighs. It has all Campy components, but I'm not sure the type.

Thanks for any advice.

Look for the SB serial on the BB. If there, the frame by itself is worth the price of admission. Typically sold as a frameset, so there would not be a set original group.

Original SBDU unit sold as a frameset, as Lynn says. No other model carried that scheme.

Update

Long overdue update, with pics. Long story short: I got it and I love it. Fits me perfectly and rides wonderfully.

As found, it had DA high flange hubs, Campy Rally RD, wide-range Suntour freewhweel, Japanese (SR?) quill pedals, missing seat and seatpost, and the super record crank had at one point been drilled for triple-izing bolts which were gone. It also had short-reach NR brakes which were not correct - the pads were half worn from sitting on the edge of the rim. The paint was original with a fair bit of wear, especially on the seat stays where a large bag must have been. But it is solid and no dings, dents, or significant rust. It is actually a 531 bike - apparently 753 was not recommended or available for larger frames, so though it is an SBDU special order frame, it's 531 and takes a 27.0 seatpost. The seat, wheels, long-reach NR brakes, and RD I got from a wrecked competition. It's not all period correct, but close enough for now. I'll add correct parts as I come across them. Or not. It's a great bike as is.

It definitely pays to volunteer at your local co-op

SB3144, which according to the Yahoogroups database, makes it something like an early 1979. And the BB is stamped 65, but set tube is a hair over 64cm, ctt.

Congrats on a great looking acquisition! The only thing I would consider changing is the handlebar tape. I don't mind the Benotto(?), but the different shade of blue is a little distracting.

One other thing to consider is addressing the exposed seat stay. If it were mine, I would consider taking the bike to an auto paint store to see if they could match the paint color. Sand the exposed area up the paint edge to create a smooth area, mask off and paint. You should be able to get a good result, and, more importantly, inhibit future rust.

Are you certain it's not 753? The 27.0 seatpost doesn't seem right for 531, and I don't see how heat treating should be an issue on larger frames, in fact I think I've seen large 753 before.

I'm no expert and could be totally wrong.

Oh, and big time congrats!!! What a score!

I agree on both points. Calamarichris's Look 753 looks to be at least as large as the this Raleigh.

Further, CV-6 has a Raleigh Team Pro 753 which takes a 27.0 post.

Yeah it's 531: the remnants of the tubing sticker is for 531. My (limited) understanding is that the longer 531 seat tubes were a hair thicker butting, thus the 27.0. The catalog info I've seen shows standard 753 up to 61cm only:

That thing is the tits. What's the top tube length? Since you say it's 531, I'm trying to compare this in my mind's eye to my Super Course with the crazy tall 64cm seat tube and the <58cm top tube.

59 CTC. Thanks. I've been riding it quite a lot lately, and it fits me very well. I've had tall bikes with longer top tubes (60-61) but they never felt quite right to me.
