1905 Bicycle Shop Advertisment

1905 advertisement from the digitized UM library archives.

For over a century Missoulians have enjoyed riding bicycles. Henry Rupert Kern owned one of the earliest bicycle shops in Missoula. He opened the Yankee Repair shop in 1885 at 125 East Main Street. Henry’s brother, Frank Kern, had arrived in Missoula a decade earlier and opened a blacksmith shop next to the Missoula Mercantile. Frank’s great grandson, Rick Kern, currently owns the Bicycle Hanger shop in Missoula.

The bike in the image looks like my wife's defiance. Also Columbia with a different top tube. c1896

Sounds impossibly expensive for the time, unless we're talking about Diamond Lil's bicycle.

Based on an internet calculator I just found, that's about $550-$2200 in today's dollars. Wow!

Something is amiss. The prices on the ad must have been altered.

Bikes were not for the lower socioeconomic class. They were expensive luxury items that had to be saved up for.

Bicycles required a lot of high tolerance parts. Back then, machine tools were very expensive, and all hand controlled, mechanical repeating lathes and such were not yet.

Unless you shop at the MEGA-mart, that's what to expect at a LBS nowadays...

Still cheap when compared to the price of a good horse(+upkeep) or an early automobile.
1909 model T's were just under $900, and they were cheap compared to other infernal combustion vehicles of the time.

I can't vouch for the prices listed, but it looks as if the lettering and graphics were digitally cut out of their original background.
