Now part of this club. I picked up an S10-S (Why do these gaspipe frames keep finding me?) for a fair price today, all original including the hard-to find primus pump, and bottle cage. There's quite a bit of grime and some surface rust (the bottle cage is almost entirely rusted over) but I think I should be able to handle it. Scale weighs it as 25 lbs, not sure of the year but it's between 75 and 76 when the fork decals were different then in other years. The stem may or may not be frozen.

It looks like it was barely ridden, if at all.

25 pounds? Should be closer to 28 to 29. These bikes may have used low end tensile steel tubing but the chrome finishes they put on the stays and forks really made them look quite nice, only the first year (71) had no chrome, and the last year (78) had no chrome on the rear stays. These bikes sold for around $210 back in the day, in today's dollars that's about a $1,000!! The S10S LTD was really a nice bike with Cromoly frame, identified with downtube shifters, along with chrome stays, forks and fork crown, this was a touring bike.

According to the catalog, a '75 23"-frame S-10S weighed in at 26.1 pounds, thanks to the alloy wheels that were introduced after the first couple of years production.. Quite light for its day. Mine later got an alloy seatpost to further lighten things up.

Yup, mine (21" frame) also appears to have an alloy seatpost and alloy KKT quill pedals rather than the steel pedals. The stem was freed, I'll have pictures in a bit when I get my camera. I do wish it had an integral derailleur hanger since they went through the trouble of having forged dropouts.

I thought that when Fuji introduced the alloy rims that the model name became the S10-a (for alloy) and they quit using S10-s as a model name.

As it is now only it has been upgraded with 105 front and rear derailleurs

(44/52 on yours, not the earlier 47/52) — you also have the magnificent Winner Freewheel 5-speed cog — the shifting of it and the V-lux is heavenly engagement if such a thing ever was. And you need the HKK Bluesky Gold/Blue chain. Another lovely detail is the cable stop with the chainstay protector, a little Suntour nicety... Happy restoration. A quick approach for you is to strip back to the Chrome and just keep that lovely Orange band. Then go with the Fujita Professional Leather saddle and Fujita leather bar wrap — killer!

Sorry, seem to have lost my earlier, more detailed post. Prior to the self-branded Fuji’s of 1971/1972 the top-of-the-line domestic machine was entitled, “The Fuji Racer.” So, yes, that is a kind of model name in itself. The top model (listed in Japan’s Bicycle Guide) in 1970, just prior to USA release is the “Fuji Racer The Finest from Fuji” — so there you have it. The “Finest” is kind of an identifier — “The Newest” was a follower with a higher specification frame build (The 1A). The parts on The Finest and The Newest were about the same — and the names, Finest/Newest were not on the actual bicycles until 1972, and not seen in the Catalogue until 1974. The 1971 special catalogue has no names on the bicycles except Fuji Racer on the Newesta nd just FUJI on the Finest. There is even a bicycle in that year that’s as rare as an honest politician called the #1000 . Regardless, yours is a 1974 (K95...) so you get all the bells and graphical whistles — “The Fuji Racer” — The Newest — ever onward (coolest slogan ever on a bicycle) — the down-tube decal, and the super lovely ensigns on the seat-stays. Based on the look of your machine, I might consider the full chromium and Orange seat-post band. Not sure if this will link to a photo bucket entry in all chrome with the leather Fujita Professional and Fujita leather bar wrap of the same vintage...

This was my first 10 speed. Green also so! My brother crashed it years later. He was forced of the road by a big truck and hit a parked car. He flew over the car and hit his head. Doc said if he hadn't had a helmet he would prob be dead. The helmet was a yellow pro tec it looked like today's skate helmets.

I've got a very pretty Fuji "Special Road Racer" that's either a 72 or 74 model. Converted to North Road bars. It has some very nice touches. Chrome fork & chain stay tips. Nice decals. Belt leather seat. Got the bike from son of original owner. Was told it was his Dad's college ride. Chrome steel wheels polished up nicely. Not too heavy. Certainly lighter than my 84 Fuji Del Rey. Wrap tie in picture has been replaced by proper cable clamps. Oh yeah almost forgot, This thing had not been ridden in decades. Something like 30 - 40 years.

I forgot to note that the man who sold it to me was a wrench himself and had hoped to restore/fix this up and make this into an around town bike but changed his mind, we talked for quite a bit. I've figured out the code and it is a 76

Hmmm, there's a blue sky chain on the bay right now, actually two. One of them a 116 link 1/2 x 3/32nd and is being touted as a BMX chain. Blue and gold color on both examples, so I imagine that is the one I need? I was eyeing up the Gran Compes as well. There seems to be more calipers than levers available, from what I have noticed anyway. Thanks for all the info!! Again. I'd be almost nowhere without it.,,,,BD

I have a question for the Newest owners out there? The only thing I'm unclear on about the paint. Are the seat stay cap faces chrome, or painted over? They seem awfully shiny, and it would be a shame to paint over them if they're supposed to have the chrome showing there. Thanks!,,,,BD

EDIT: I just noticed this evening that I have a set of Weinmann 610's on my Moto GT. I unbolted them, and tried the one caliper on both the front and rear of the Newest. In both positions the 610's hit the rim right in the middle of the braking surface of 27 inch rims. I immediately went to the bay and grabbed the last set of NOS Gran Compe centerpulls. Sweet, another original part going to the restoration. Now I only need brake levers, and a Sugino Mighty. The rims I kind of doubt I can find, and if I could they would either be in bad shape or outside my budget range. I will keep trying though.

Since there seems to be a lot of love for the S-10-S/Special Road Racer here, I figured I'd mention that I have a nice SRR frame and fork--white in color--that's too small for me. I'd guess it's about a 23" frame. Paint is excellent, as is the chrome. The original seatpost, headset, bottom bracket, handlebars, stem, and brakes/brake levers are still with it. I'd be up for a trade if someone has a bigger one, or something else interesting. I don't have photos now but could snap a few if there's any interest.
