Skid Lids...
Anybody here wear them?
I'm looking to get some vintage headgear to go with my C&V bike, and I thought that the skid lids might fit the bill because they seem to offer some decent protection. I thought of going with a leather "hairnet", but I understand they don't offer any real protection.
What do you guys wear?

The Skid Lid was considered to be one of the least protective helmets of its time.
The Bell Biker was just too dorky for anyone.
Leather hairnets didn't offer much impact protection, but they weren't too bad at minimizing scraping type injuries.
The V1-Pro was one of the first Snell approved helmets ~1985 - might find one of those around.

I like my Giro. Personally I would never wear a vintage helmet of limited protective value.
That's my opinion. That and three bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbuckers.

I would be highly suspect of using any vintage helmet for crash protection. Plastics, foam and glue degrade over time and likely offer even less protection now than they did when new. Helmets used for motorsports have a defined expiration date and are inspected for compliance at many racing events.

I tossed out my patent leather "hair net" head gear long ago. I wish I had kept it just for display.
For a period correct helmet... The Bell V-1 Pro, but I think even after all these years, that would be suspect too. The EPS inner shell is not designed to live this long.
I buy modern, and buy with the attitude that every 3 years its time for a new one, or one headstrike. Buy light in color and light in weight and that fits.

I started a thread about helmets that go with C&V bikes a while back, you should search for it. I got some good suggestions.
There are some people who will complain about a helmet thread, you have to emphasize that the thread is NOT a debate about helmet use, or safety. It is about helmet STYLE. Don't get off track if someone tries to bait you.
Personally, I wear a modern helmet. It's ugly. I'm still looking for one that doesn't look silly.

I wore one for 5 years till the foam disintegrated! About thirty years ago, of course. It was the "better than nothing" mentality. Not for the squeamish with vivid imagination, especially if you've had close calls with guard rails. Of course the one time I had a serious accident (crashed trying to hop train tracks, landing on the back of my head) I wasn't wearing the damn thing. I doubt it would have prevented the concussion though...

For $99 at CC, you can't go wrong.
I just bought a new Bell Volt last year, or I would consider one as well.
The Volt makes one look like they have a mushroom head, but it is light, the colors are ok, the fit is outstanding, and most importantly the venting works beautifully.

I discovered that if I put the mirror down, I can't see what I look like when wearing my Giro Atmos helmet.
Try it, it works.

Obvious ventilation issues aside, I think some Nutcase helmets come pretty close to feeling vintage. Have never tried one out, though...
