Just landed a small C&V "white whale" this weekend.......
It's one of those things that seems so overpriced that chances of getting an NOS one was always such a long shot........Till this weekend.......
While surfing late in a very warm sleepless night this last Friday, I discovered an auction just posted up for six of these very sought after Mavic headsets with a quite low starting price and option to offer. I think I was the first to send an offer and it was accepted Saturday morning! I got it for about half of what they usuallly go for NOS out there! The other five went real fast as the starting price was adjusted upwards as demand for them shot up in the next few hours as people woke up Satuday morning.
Quite surprised when the little white whale beached itself at my doorstep this afternoon!....
The headset is as nice as I expected it to be, much nicer in quality/finish-wise than all the Stronglight headsets I've owned and seen. Nice satin polished finish and good clear anodizing, unlike the Stronglights that typically have a lot of machining patterns still visible. Really like the way that it has pressed-in steel races, unlike the weenie-centric JPR that I have that runs its bearing directly on aluminum grooves in the cups. Light, but doubt if it will last half or even a third as long as the my new Mavic and my Stronglights.

Very cool. Nothing beats the rush of a good ebay deal... well, not that I personally know of. I like the look of it. Unusual in a good way.

What's the stack height on that; it looks tall. Neat design, almost has a '40s industrial look. Does that take a couple proprietary wrenches to install?

^ Yes, Mavic does make special wrenches (Mavic part #671/672). They are quite rare. Cupertino Bike Shop has a set, btw. A set was on ebay recently, but I did not bid high enough.

A couple of the special wrench sets have come up lately at eBay and I've seen a few others earlier in the year for sale, so they might not be that hard to find after all.
I'm actually thinking of using band wrenches instead of the Mavic wrenches to install this as I'm thinking the Mavic wrenches might leave gouges on the notches on the headset......Just wondering if I can get it tight enough. Same goes for one of my later model needle bearing Stonglight and my JPR headsets that uses Delrin and O-ring inserts to keep the upper race on the steerer tube, instead of a separate top lock nut....(Nylock stye??.......... could they be a "death" headsets?).....
