Just blew a sale

Or maybe I wasn't very nice.

Saw a listing for an overpriced gas-pipe bike that someone had some barcons on at one point. I called and asked him if we was interested in parting out the shifters and possibly the crankset. He seemed to be contemplating it then asked me how I thought he would sell the rest of the bike with the missing parts. I suggested he could repost it in the Boat section. :D
Yeah, that didn't go over too well... it gets boring being nice all of the time.

Puget Pounder 11-18-11 03:28 PM

Classic!

AZORCH 11-18-11 04:02 PM

Ain't a bit nice, but I love it!

twolve 11-18-11 05:01 PM

You have to mix it up every once in a while :)

Funny, last week somebody posted a gas pipe bike upgraded with bar cons on CL for $150. I asked it he would just sell the shifters. His response was "I'll sell you the whole bike for $30".

Hah. Just tell him it has as much chance selling for his asking price with or without the parts---nil.

Easy, it's all about venue. Dreamland CL.

Speaking of Dreamland CL:

Last week a woman on VT-CL posted this: "1960 Schwinn, $200." The description was the same with no pictures.

I emailed 3 times before she responded and finally sent me a picture of a 1982-83 Sidewinder, which is an EF Continental/Varsity/Collegiate with an MTB fork and 26" knobby tires. I politely told her the correct date and sent links to catalog pages and coached her on how to look for the date stamp, and serial number and which letters to look for to confirm the 22 year newer date.

Since it looked to be in average to below average shape, in need of lots of service and TLC, I politely asked if she would consider $50-75, depending on what I saw after driving some 1.5-2 hours each way to see the bike.

She declined, told me the bike was worth that much and more, that it had to be older than 1982 since she had owned it for 15 years, and everything worked (even though the tires were flat and the chain looked a bit rusty in the picture). I responded back, "best of luck on your sale."

But here's the kicker:

Yesterday this shows up on VT-CL; "Schwinn Mountain Cruiser- $750"

The derailer has been replaced. It's in good working condition but defnitely not perfect.

It's the same bike and now the price is inflated almost by a factor of 4! At least the date has come a bit closer.

You gotta admit - those are some pretty ahh-worthy brake cables..err...housings..or something.....

ish 11-19-11 11:15 AM

Golden rims and brake cables? Melted down, they are worth more than $750!

Maxturbo 11-19-11 11:32 AM

It's now being offered by the...Winooski Bicycle shop, Winoosky VT!

They must have bought it from that lady and see a whole lot more in it than any of the rest of us do.

Oldpeddaller 11-19-11 12:32 PM

Oooh! Aaah! Uuugh!

Does this mean she tricked the shop guys into thinking it was worth it?

ish 11-19-11 03:57 PM

Maybe one of the employees thought it was a King Sting.

Maxturbo 11-19-11 04:25 PM

Now it's down to $525!

Maxturbo 11-22-11 06:40 PM

The Mtn Cruiser is down to $225.

The only time I've had an emotional reaction to a brake cable was this one time when it broke...

She needs a better picture...

It could have been a joke by the bike shop. At least, I hope so.

I don't know if you all consider the Schwinn EF models to be "gaspipe", but in the Detroit CL, the asking price for Varsitys, Continentals and Collegiates is anywhere from $50 to $150, and this is a depressed market. Although, obviously, asking price is not necessarily selling price.

Doohickie 11-22-11 11:47 PM

Possibly related. I posted this to Trollheim, but for those who don't have Trollheim access:

The ad:

CENTURION SIGNET 10 SP-60cm/24inch-Tall Bicycle/High End-Ex Condition - $225
CENTURION SIGNET 10 SPEED - 60cm/24inch-Tall Person Bicycle/High End in Excellent Pristene Condition (see pictures-then come see the bike) - Only ridden about 5 times for short distances since the day it was purchased new at the store! This bike spent it's entire life hanging on a bike rack inside a garage. This bike is beautiful and made of Tange's high-end Champion #1 or #2 tubing, a double-butted, seamless chromium-molybdenum (CrMo) steel alloy, which is of the same caliber as the Columbus SLX/SP (CrMo) and Reynolds 531 (manganese-molybdenum) tubesets. You must see this bike to appreciate it's excellence. Completely high end bike from the 80's in about as perfect of original condition as could be found with a bike from this time period. You will not find a better price on a bike of this quality anywhere in this pristene condition. Asking $225

My email exchange with the seller:

The reason you haven’t sold it yet is that it is overpriced by about a factor of two. Should be $100-150.

The reason I never sold it is I was on vacation for 2 of the 3 weeks it's been on here. Finish the heroin needle in your arm, it is obvious you are on some very heavy drugs. I have been offered $225 17 times and $200 84 times. I enjoy riding one of the best bikes ever made now, so I may raise the price. Your wife also says my dick is way longer and fatter than yours when she tries to put it in her mouth.

Also, if you notice, the low end bikes all have stem shifters. The LeMans and up have downtube shifters. The Elite and up get rid of the suicide levers on the brakes. Your bike has both, indicating lower quality. Your Signet also has a bolt-on derailleur hanger; all the high-end bikes have integral hangers. Finally, you don’t know whether it’s Champion 1 or Champion 2 tubing. Is that because there is no decal? If there is no decal, it’s because there is nothing to brag about… in other words, high tensile steel, the bottom of the barrel.

You might find a sucker to give you $225 for that bike, but if you do it’ll be someone who knows even less about bikes than you do.

I thought about posting the whole exchange to CL under "RE: CENTURION SIGNET 10 SP-60cm/24inch-Tall Bicycle/High End-Ex Condition - $225" but.... nah.

I'm kind've appalled low end 80's centurions still had safety levers and stem shifters!

Doohickie 11-23-11 01:49 AM

Pretty typical really. It brought the Euro style drop bar bike to the masses. Virtually every bike maker did it.
