Just blew a sale
Or maybe I wasn't very nice.
Saw a listing for an overpriced gas-pipe bike that someone had some barcons on at one point. I called and asked him if we was interested in parting out the shifters and possibly the crankset. He seemed to be contemplating it then asked me how I thought he would sell the rest of the bike with the missing parts. I suggested he could repost it in the Boat section. :D Yeah, that didn't go over too well... it gets boring being nice all of the time. |

Funny, last week somebody posted a gas pipe bike upgraded with bar cons on CL for $150. I asked it he would just sell the shifters. His response was "I'll sell you the whole bike for $30". |

Speaking of Dreamland CL:
Last week a woman on VT-CL posted this: "1960 Schwinn, $200." The description was the same with no pictures. I emailed 3 times before she responded and finally sent me a picture of a 1982-83 Sidewinder, which is an EF Continental/Varsity/Collegiate with an MTB fork and 26" knobby tires. I politely told her the correct date and sent links to catalog pages and coached her on how to look for the date stamp, and serial number and which letters to look for to confirm the 22 year newer date. Since it looked to be in average to below average shape, in need of lots of service and TLC, I politely asked if she would consider $50-75, depending on what I saw after driving some 1.5-2 hours each way to see the bike. She declined, told me the bike was worth that much and more, that it had to be older than 1982 since she had owned it for 15 years, and everything worked (even though the tires were flat and the chain looked a bit rusty in the picture). I responded back, "best of luck on your sale." But here's the kicker: Yesterday this shows up on VT-CL; "Schwinn Mountain Cruiser- $750"

I don't know if you all consider the Schwinn EF models to be "gaspipe", but in the Detroit CL, the asking price for Varsitys, Continentals and Collegiates is anywhere from $50 to $150, and this is a depressed market. Although, obviously, asking price is not necessarily selling price. |

This bike spent it's entire life hanging on a bike rack inside a garage. This bike is beautiful and made of Tange's high-end Champion #1 or #2 tubing, a double-butted, seamless chromium-molybdenum (CrMo) steel alloy, which is of the same caliber as the Columbus SLX/SP (CrMo) and Reynolds 531 (manganese-molybdenum) tubesets. You must see this bike to appreciate it's excellence. Completely high end bike from the 80's in about as perfect of original condition as could be found with a bike from this time period. You will not find a better price on a bike of this quality anywhere in this pristene condition. Pretty typical really. It brought the Euro style drop bar bike to the masses. Virtually every bike maker did it.
