I didn't have a very good title for my previous post, sorry about this being an almost-duplicate. I also added more photos.

I've just purchased this bike and it will be here later this week.

Can anyone help with an year of manufacture? The serial number is DS148XX.

Thanks in advance.

I am not a Bianchi expert, but looking at the components, I would say around 1984 to 1986 range. Nice looking bike.

sweet. i'd be afraid to ride it; it is just too pretty. is this a basement find? are those original components? is that a piaggio label on the seat post? if so, why? the brown matching cable housing must be original.

you have been blessed.

Actually, this was a CL find. I haven't seen it in person yet, that will be towards the end of the week. OK, I forgot about the Thanksgiving holiday - I won't see it until early next week.

From what the PO told it is original and close to mint condition. I have wanted a nice steel frame road bike and since I use a smaller frame than is commonly found, I was looking for a while. This came up and I jumped on it.

Can't wait to ride it and it will be ridden just like it was intended. No garage queen here.

I'm just trying to learn a bit here. What makes it an '81? Components? Decals? Paint? Serial number? All of the above?

Thanks.

Piaggio

Nice scooter-I mean bike. Bianchi was affiliated with Piaggio scooters for a time I believe.
I read somewhere that it is Japanese made (maybe ishiwata?) which explains why Bianchi did not allow the stamps on the fork crown or stays.
If I recall correctly, the tubing and workmanship is quite good besting the Italians at the time, but lacking the prestige of "made in Italy" models. Just an opinion that i read somewhere.
I picked up the same bike frame a couple years ago and fitted some modern 105 components. It was my first forray into bicycles since I was a kid and I still ride it at work. I can post a photo later if you wish.
Nice bike. THanks for posting.

yes all of the above. while certain models tended to carry the same group or 'kit' (and it was not uncommon for Bianchi to mix parts back then for price points) they did change a bit. the big thing I look at first is the decal style and that one was used in the early '80s on the lower half of the line, then about '83/4 it switched to the "flag" style on the lower models.
