Nice,

I added these to my watch list. I'd be amazed if they went for the BIN price.

I don't believe that even the most rabid Raleigh lover would be willing to pay the kind of money that they're asking for these bikes. Don't get me wrong, I like Raleigh's as much or more as the next guy, but pragmatism has to be part of the equation. That said, I think the pictures that are posted indicate one beautiful bike and if the men's bike is even close whoever gets these will have real gems on their hands, but I can tell you they're not going to go at those prices!

Makes me ponder the perceived value of mint condition versus mere excellent condition. A few weeks ago my brother bought a green Raleigh Superbe for $20. Yes, there are some paint chips, and a dent in the front fender, but overall it looks great and everything functions.

IIRC I bought my own Sports for 20 bucks in a local thrift
store back in the day when you could still do that sort of thing.

I love it dearly, ride it all over town, and consider it a great bike.

I would never sell it. Neither would i expect someone to pay
a thousand bucks for it.........except on e-bay, the world of fantasy.

+1

These epitomize what we mean when we say "wall hanger".
I don't understand why these would cost so much more than one in good condition - they were all meant to be ridden, weren't they?

Not a chance. I bought two untouched and unused '73 Sports in mint condition out of an old lady's shed for $100 total - and that only because I wanted to give the lady a fair deal.

This is just ludicrous.

I know what you mean. I recently found one at my local thrift for the outrageous price of $32.

I always find it both frustrating and somewhat amusing that an Ebay seller can't be bothered to put a check mark in the "Supersize Photos" box when they create their listing, especially for a complete bicycle, most especially for a complete for which they are asking a whole lotta money.

BIN price is double what it should be for matching NOS all-chrome Superbes. That's something I could justify like 1500 on. But almost 3 grand for a pair of Sports? No effin way.

Local pick-up only, in NYC too.

That makes for a difficult auction / sale. But then again, if one was willing to fork out $3K for em', then I guess you'd deal with the distance maneuver somehow.

Maybe a LBS or dealer Pro-pack or a local friend / trip intervention of some sort.

These were bought together in 1971 and have remained together since. The original owners(now both in their 70's)
intended them for a trip to Martha's Vineyard, but instead ended up leaving them parked at home, until now!
I've had time to reflect on this. If there is wisdom to be
gained from this (and when is there not ?) it is that the
clock is ticking and you should not put off that trip to
Martha's Vineyard.

A. These are not the first NOS Raleigh Sports that I've seen in the seven years I've been in this hobby, but they are the priciest. One seller was unloading boxed examples on eBay about four years ago; they were bringing approximately $350-500/ea, depending on the frame size and color.

B. If they "look and ride like new," that means someone rode them. So much for the seller's NOS claim.

C. NOS, boxed Raleigh Sports exist, so why should one wish to pay such a premium for built examples, even if they were legitimately NOS (which they aren't)?

on a side tangent.....I hate it when theres detailed pictures of parts but they never pan out to show the entire bike.

they show one crappy image of one of the bikes, but 8 pictures on closeups. frigin rediculous.

The problem with bikes like this is that the real enjoyment one would get from them would come from riding them. Raleigh Sports are tough to beat for ride quality. These just aren't the kind of bikes someone would want as a wall hanger. I could see if they were something a bit rarer or unusual. Everybody has seen a Sports before so the "wow" factor just isn't there no matter how pretty they are.

I kind of remember these being on NY Craig's List, maybe a year ago. Ride them for a season and you'll wind up with a $100 bike.

$2800...dare to dream!

For $2,800 I'd at least want them gold plated

...and, as I said before, he already let it slip that they aren't genuinely NOS.

I would much rather ride something with a little history... something er, classic AND vintage. These have no appeal to me whatseover.

For $2800 you'd think the seller would make a little more effort with the photography. Those photos are crap. And one of my pet hates of recent is clicking on a photo and just getting the same size I appreciate sellers who post nice, big photos, which show you detail, very much

I suppose this Chrome DL-1 for $4,295 is a tad high?

Anyone check out his other albums? He has a 47 Lenton and a 67 superbe too. I have seen these bikes before... he's been at it for a long, long time. I'm guessing he will be waiting years at this price.
