PSIMET did the build. This follow a similar pattern as the wheels I had built for my Serotta - black rims, black nipples, silver spokes & hubs. If I like these rims as much as some people seem to be, I may eventually invest in a second set for the Gazelle AB-Frame, or move the Serotta's wheels over to that bike. The Open Pro / Daytona's rims are starting to show their miles, figure I'll get the hubs serviced this year and maybe next year have them rebuilt with new rims.

Another milestone completed today. Got the call from Joe Bell to discuss paint. Just emailed him the mockups I'd made and a few other pictures to work from. So it's pretty much set, blue w/ white is the plan. Told Joe I'm leaving the exact design of the panel(s) to him, so there'll be a little element of surprise when it arrives. Also, got the wheels wrapped in their tires, still haven't ordered skewers, and still debating stem/bar/post - but probably end up going with Ritchey, maybe the Wet-Black for those parts as nothing else has really perked my interest that I've seen yet.

Paint plans finalized with Joe now that he's back from NAHBS. Blue w/ white seat tube panel, head tube. Silver accents.

Also purchased the last of the parts I needed for the full build. Decided on a full Ritchey set for the bars/stem/post. WCS carbon seat post, WCS 4-axis 44 stem and the WCS 'Classic' (deep) drop bar. Saddle is either going to be a fizik aliante versus or the standard fizik aliante that's currently on the Fuji depending on if I like the Versus version. Oh, and picked up some of the Velo-Orange silver quick release skewers to complete the wheel build. They have a nice classic look to them, fairly small levers that won't over power / ruin the look of the minimal rear drop out and forks.

Only decision left is if I want to buy a different color cable housing other than the Campagnolo black that came with the group.

YAY!!!

ive not seen those skewers before. the levers look like knockoffs of the late 90s/early 2000s record skewers. the price is right too. report back on there quality if you can. ive been watching ebay for a set of record ones (because i like the way they look and function) but can not justify the cost on a cheap non campy equipped bike.

i vote black housing. i debated it on my tommasini but it ended up complementing the black rims, saddle, and brake hoods.

Very snazzy!

I can't wait for pics, as I really do admire Mr. Kirk's handywork.

As for the VO skewers, they work great and look pretty decent.

Here is a Kirk on ebay that might get re-listed. Not a terraplane but still nice!

If that was a Terraplane frame, I would have long ago bought it...

Little too large for me.

I want the Terraplane stays as well when I finally cough up for one.

Man, that is one beautiful bicycle, isn't it!

re: rando Kirk on eBay - if that was a couple cm smaller I'd snatch it up, have it shipped straight to Dave for a Terraplane infusion and sell off the rest of the collection (other than maybe the Serotta) to finance it.

As far as affording one, the wait is probably around 12mo or so these days, budget $300/mo starting now, put the deposit down end of April, have one for next riding season. That's basically how I managed it. Had an automatic withdrawal from my checking into my bike saving acct, so when Dave sends that final invoice it'll all be set and ready.

Also found these rather interesting headset spacers that I ordered, I'll see how I like them in person when they arrive. I wanted something with silver and black in them to tie the headset (silver King planned) and black stem (with silver face plate) together. I believe these are the same I saw on a Crosscheck that a rider in my club had a few weeks back that I liked the looks of. Plan is for 15mm under the stem, probably keep 5-10mm above the stem to allow for some adjustment in the future as needed.

Your self control over 12 months is astounding. I'd have to sell a kidney.

Grady...Are you worried about the ST length?

I thought I remembered that we rode similar size frames...according to the text the saddle height is spot on (for me) at ~79cm.

I would prefer a 58cm ST...but...not a deal breaker, and it has a very slightly sloped TT.

Waiting for someone's abandoned Terraplane to pop up...

$300 deposit down last April, $700 sent in around October but wasn't really due till the was ready to be built which was late November, final lump sum due when the frame ships. Having a nice collection of bikes to keep me busy and a few projects (both bike, web-based and home related) to keep my attention during the wait helped. It also allowed me time to wait for deals on some of the parts. Got the 2010 Athena group on close-out, tires from ProBikeKit on one of their blow-out sales, pedals off eBay for a good price, etc. Also don't know if I would have been able to finalize color choices any sooner anyways!

re: second hand Kirks - if you all aren't watching the Paceline.net (formerly Serotta forums) Marketplace forum, then that's the first place to watch for custom frames of all brands to come up for sale. I've seen more than a handful of Kirks trade hands over there while I waited for mine to be built. It took some resolve not to grab one that was 'close' just to resell when mine was done.

You are right.

So, so close.

My kids tell me I'm shrinking!!!

Never the words I would like to hear.

Actually all rationalizing. I'll definitely settle into one of these, especially with Cuda2ks excellent payment/budgeting schedule.

Just got a call from Joe Bell, frame details all that's left to be done on the color coats. Then it's into clear coat. Estimated departure from his shop is early next week to head back to Kirk's for final prep and headset install. He called to discuss the idea of doing the small frame details in white instead of the originally discussed silver, which I agreed to (and was actually pondering on the drive home this afternoon in fact). Joe must be able to read minds or something.

First of 3 expected parts packages arrived today, this one from JensonUSA containing a stem and seatpost. Just a few parts left, and then the big box with a frame in it! The way it's shaping up, looks like it'll be here right around my birthday.

It was everything I could do to keep from telling Dave to send me the photos immediately. Decided that I'd waited this long, I could wait a few more days to see it in completed first in person. ETA is Saturday, assembly planned for Sunday since I will be leading a 45+ mi ride on Saturday morning and want my wits about me when I'm using tools around this frame. Dave said that the color and details that Joe did came out great.

One thing, I won't be using the headset spacers I posted above. They're 1 1/8" and I didn't even think that the fork/ht would be a 1" setup, I went straight from 1" threaded to 1 1/8" threadless on the Fuji, so it didn't register that the Kirk would be a 1" fork. Thankfully Dave mentioned it when we were getting the headset details ironed out (silver Chris King installed) and I was able to get some 1" spacers. Dave shipped me some, and I also got some of the Knurled spacers that Velo-Orange sells. Those arrived today, so I'll have an option on what to put on when I get things built up.

All the parts are laid out on the work bench, work stand set up, dug out my spare alum 27.2 post to clamp to instead of the carbon post or fresh paint. Unless FedEx is lyin to me, should be delivered some time tomorrow. I'm skipping my morning club ride on the off chance it gets here early, so it'll likely show up late in the afternoon. Promise to at least post a few shots up before I start assembly in earnest.

Are you kidding, after waiting ~360 days, I'm not letting FedEx have it any longer than needed. Last check it was in Sherman Tx, and as of 7:17am local time, out for delivery.

I am going to get some yard work done right now, so I have the afternoon free to get the build done.
