My Score of the Year (Wild Paint Content)

Last week while checking CL during lunch, I found an ad for "2 Road Bikes need work" for $75, the picture wasn't clear, but the ad said it was a Land Shark and a Bianchi. I couldn't type my e-mail fast enough, but it was 10 minutes after the ad posed, so I figured I didn't have a chance. I didn't get any response during the afternoon, but just as I got off my bike upon arriving home from work, my phone was ringing. It was the woman with the bikes, she told me I was the first of over 70 e-mails, and they were mine if I wanted them. We made arrangements for me to pick them up the following evening. The Bianchi was rough as she had told me, but the Land Shark looked good even with dry rotted tires, and it was my size. I cleaned it up, replaced tires, cables, bartape, etc., and rode it to work last Monday for its 30 mile maiden voyage, it rides beautifully, and is definitely a keeper. It has a Campy Chorus 8 speed group, and even a Chris King headset. The fillet brazing is gorgeous, and John Slawta's wild paint is amazing. Her are a couple pics:

Comes up just a little short of the $24 purchase of Manhattan from the native Americans living there...

... but still pretty good!!!!!

Cool bicycle.

This is the exact reason we probably spend way too much time on our local CL.

Hoping we are the "lucky" one.

Nice, especially that it is your size. Let's see some shots of the Bianchi, it can't be too bad for $37.50

I'll get some pics of the Bianchi after it is back together, (1987 Volpe) but it is very rough (looks like it spent some time outside). I got the stem and seatpost out OK, but had to break the chain in 3 spots to remove it, the crank had to be removed with a pickle fork, the BB was a mass of rust, and it was full of ants! I found 2 small rust holes in the left chainstay where it had been worn by a rubbing tire. I did a quick braze job on the rust, and will see if it holds up. It did come with nice Suntour bar end shifters and derailleurs, so it was worth the $25 (the split was 50 for the Land Shark, 25 for the Bianchi), even if the frame is junk. Luckily it is my size, too, so I may get some use out of it as a winter commuter if it hold together (I would never resell a rusty frame like this). It had been a long dry spell before this deal came up.

Better yet, the trade of new amsterdam for surinam. They really thought they struck a good deal, a decrepit harbour for a nice little spice producing country. How wrong my fellow dutchies were!

A one man ( John Slawta - frame building and paint) shop in Oregon, he built Andy Hampsten's Giro winning bike. He is known for his wild paint jobs, the crew at Cyclesdeoro tell me that unfortunately he only does carbon frames now.

That thing is really cool. I had only seen Landshark frames on a website out of Oregon called GVH bikes. This might be the second one posted here. Andy Hampsten rode one on his win in the 1988 Giro d'Italia. Check out the video on the Landshark website.

Wow, i hate you. So you're the schlep who has time to email within minutes of a posting to jump on an awesome deal, and then once you are lottery picked to get the goods you hold off to pick it up till the NEXT day?

I guess i'm doomed to be the other guy who is willing to show up immediately with double the money in hand, but Nooooo, you've got the seller on the hook.
Glad you're in SC or I'd be a sore loser.

Good job. I was early on the e-mail list as well. She was overwhelmed by the response.

My GF has two ~1990 Landsharks. One road, one MTB. Great ride, says she.
