Well folks, so far I'm stumped. I was hoping that the C inside the rear dropouts would tip somebody off but no such luck. I've also looked at the seat stay caps and nothing there. They are completely flat.

Logically, the C could represent either the brand of bicycle, the bicycle factory or the dropout manufacturer. The strange thing is that they're on the inside of the dropout. Logos and names are typically placed on the outside of the dropout, so they're visible.
It's just a stab in the dark, but given the era, it may be China Bicycle Company. It's the biggest Asian company I can think of that starts with a C. In the 1990s they were big competition for Giant and have manufactured Schwinn, Specialized and Diamondback, among others.

I am not very familiar with them, but I was thinking KHS too because of the funny cable guide placement. maye a Baracuda? Redline?

Derailleur hanger threads are great, fuzzy photo just makes it look that way. How are the KHS serial numbers set up? I have one letter followed by 8 digits U20206717 google time

Well folks, so far all of the brand suggestions have reached a dead end. None of the brands thus far have a serial number format that matches mine. How often does it happen that we don't identify someone's bike? I guess I'm so used to most of these mysteries being solved within 10 replies that I never imagined mine would be that odd.
As far as the China bicycle company goes, I can't find much about them or the bikes. I'm sure these left side cable guides will unlock the mystery eventually. Until then, is it safe to say we are possibly stumped?

Steel is real, baby!
I had a mid/late '80s Nishiki that had the brake housing guides on the side of the top tube like that.
Regardless of what it is, it's a pretty cool frame.

Thanks frpax, I found a 1987 Nishiki catalog on the web and the frame sure does resemble the Altron 7000. However, that's an aluminum bike and mine is steel. It still looked to have the same dropouts, fork and cable routing. The Nishiki serial number database doesn't support the theory though. Schucks. Are there any more experts that care to chime in?

Though I'm not usually one to drag up zombie threads, I couldn't help myself with this one. I know that most of us like a good puzzle and this one has been in the back of my mind (and garage for that matter) for some time. I think I may have cracked the case:
I believe this the be a 1991 Specialized, most likely a Sirrus. Could it be that someone here may have one to verify?
