A Easter Bike For Christmas

First I would like to say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to every one here at C&V and thought I would share a bike build for my wife that I am going to give her for Christmas. Not really having a bike to call her own I thought this would be the perfect gift this year.
I started with a NOS Diamond Back Override hybrid frame that I picked up from the shop I work at, most of the parts came from my bins & a newer Giant hybrid that was T Boned by a car, WNG supplied the XT RD and my boss helped with a few things to bring it all together like the NOS yellow Blackburn MTN RACK & purple ODI John Tomac grips.

I wanted to build this bike as bullet proof as I could with the parts on hand so I decided to build it more like a MTB then a hybrid and I used a 9spd drivetrain built from Shimano XT,LX & STX components including the rear wheel which I built up with a XT 9spd hub & DT spokes. The brakes are Tektro V brakes that came from the totaled Giant as were the wheels, tires & alloy bars. The chain is a Daytona Campy 9spd unit with silver plates. The headset I used was a NOS Mudmaster self adjusting unit we had at the shop, so far I don't like it and I will change it out as soon as it gives me a problem but for now it stays. The seat was one thing that I couldn't replace, it is my wifes and has been on four different bikes so I installed a new cover on it.

I am happy with the way it came out and it rides fantastic, with the LX rapid fire shifters it shifts fast and smooth. It reminds me of a Easter egg with the purple and yellow, I also got her a yellow Cannondale riding jersey and a pair of purple Pace riding shorts that match the bike perfect, she will have no problem being seen. I have also picked up a purple incredibell and will be getting a decent light & tail light this week to put in her stocking. Below are some photos I took last week, let me know what you guys think.

Nice! It's the "Cadbury Special!" What a great present; so much better than a "stock" build off the shelf. I'm sure she'll love it.

[EDIT: I was actually just making a joke, but heck, it looks like you got the colors right...check their website]

Nicely detailed, right down to the purple cable ends.
I am certain she'll love it!

Very eye-catching! Your wife is a lucky woman! And I had no idea that cable ends could be found in purple. Cool.

I'm sure you already know the down-side. She'll expect a red/green road bike for Easter.

As long as she is a rider, she will love it.

It looks great.

Thanks for the compliments it means a lot coming from you guys. I think she is going to love it, plus she has no idea what I am getting her this year. I need to pick it up today from the shop and I am going to have to take it apart as the dealer still has my Bronco (since May ) and all I have is the little Ford Focus loaner to try and fit it in.

A little white basket on the front won't spoil the effect too much, will it? I put one on my wife's trike , along with a Strawberry Shortcake saddle . She just laughed, and took them off before she rode it .

What, no fenders? And where's the Sturmey 3-speed hub? Actually, the bike looks like it turned out nicely and should be a lot of fun!

I had originally planed this build around a SA IGH that was three internal and a 7 speed freewheel giving 21 speeds, then I thought about putting a triple up front making it a 63 speed drivetrain, but I didn't want to wast a good Schwinn Hybrid that there is nothing wrong with to make it happen. I then received the newer totaled Giant hybrid that had a lot of good parts that I could use instead to build the DB up. I wanted to put fenders on it originally but with the rack I put on there is no way fenders are going to fit plus it would be hard to get my wife out riding in the rain at this point, but I wanted to build this bike to get her out more on the road, she likes to ride but never had a good bike growing up.

I picked up a nice NOS Cannondale Caboose insulated rack bag in lite purple for her and a good 7 led headlight with one of the brightest rear blinking tail lights available for night riding. The fork has mid mount braze on's for a rack that I would like to get ( I know Frantic had the matching yellow front rack from his Apex).
