My '83 Californian project

How it looked when i first got it-

Removed the crappy seat cover,to discover that it still had the original factory seat-

Then it looked like this for a little bit while i got rid of as much surface rust as possible, using a piece of steel wool and lots of elbow grease. Also degreased/regreased all the bearings and wirewheels a ton of the nuts/bolts/small items-

How it sat for a while afterwords-

How it currently sits-

I have factory replica tires coming tommorow. Will post new pics then. I've already located some factory replica grips for only 20 bucks. I'll order them next. The difficult part is going to be finding an original pad set.

those wheels look extra small for some reason, are they 20" or something else?

I love a nice chrome bmx. I had an ELF when I was a kid.

They're 20" wheels. My tires were scheduled to be delivered today but didn't show up. Pretty disappointing. I just left the bike at the shop. Hopefully the tires come in tommorow and i can spare a few minutes to install them.

Tires came in today, and we were slow enough that i could spare a few minutes to install them..

You can notice where i handpainted the engraved MX logo. I did this for both brake calipers and brake levers. Not factory but a very nice, subtle touch.

Next up will be the factory grips. I found them for $19.99 on a vintage website, not including shipping. They're brand new,but made from the original mold.

Edit:: The spokes are in bad shape,i know. I plan to order new spokes and re-lace the wheels once i'm done with everything else.

I couldnt find a place that sold the original red bands to go inside the rim,so i used a 700 rim strip, then used the regular rubber rim strip on top to prevent flats. Not bad for a total cost of $1.61 eh?

I never had one myself, but my best friend had a few of them back in the day. Nice looking bike.

Is old school BMX still pulling a premium? I sold a set of Crupi square pedals about a year ago for a decent price. Makes me wish I kept all my old BMX stuff when I rode about fifteen years ago.
