Everest Chain repair
Hello,
I just purchased this Everest Slotted chain on Ebay:
"1970s -1980s Everest Serie Special Slotted Italian Bicycle Chain NOS Campagnolo"
I noticed when opening the box that one of the outer shells has snapped in half (see pic)
is it possible to replace this with a generic one?
size is standard 1/2 x 3/32 for road, 5 or 6 speed.
THANK YOU!

Wow, never seen that. And I used to use those chains.... the lure of less mass.
I would degrease it and look under a loop at other potential problems.
Just do not use Simple Green to cut the grease.

I'll echo Big Block. Sure you need every link? Usually there are a few left over. You might be able to substitute a side plate from another chain, but I doubt it. Hollow pins?... the holes that receive them are different size, I would think. You might try it though.

I love those chains, and have never seen anything like that happen before, even on old, really abused ones. If you really need the link, PM me, and I can give you one. I usually have a few links left over from my refits lying around someplace. As I remember they didn't actually weigh in lighter than non-slotted for some reason, but maybe I'm wrong about that... The weenie in me bought a Regina hollow pin chain for my lightweight rebuild.

Thanks Last Ride
I'll take it to the bike shop where I'm having my bicycle built.
If I happen to need the extra link I'll send you a message.
Thanks again

Beautiful chains, those. I used one at L'Eroica last year...and one link half snapped on me, leaving me limping in the final 20k or so in the one gear that the chainline ran true in. I'll never use one again for anything other than a wallbike.

That post vanished.
To recap. Simple Green when used straight or in very strong solution causes hydrogen embrittlement in chains. Micro-cracks form when left to soak overnight or longer.
It was discussed a few years ago on the CR list when it was a list.
Also bad for aluminum when exposed for extended periods.
There is a Simple Green HD for that.
