Oh my gosh, I am so out of shape

26 miles today hurt so bad. To be precise the last 10 miles or so hurt.
I have been so lazy the past 6~8 months. Excess Holiday weight isn't helping, either.

My 2012 resolution is to MUCH more regimented and ride 3-4 times per week.

Hey I did 26 miles today as well! I had an injury in July that severely changed my riding routine, so this was a very painful ride. Luckily the weather cooperated, and it was mostly dry. What was the temperature in Tempe today?

BentLink 01-02-12 06:10 PM

Patience and persistence will get your legs and lungs back. Don't forget, cycling is fun!

WNG 01-03-12 01:40 AM

At least the weather is cooperating. No excuse but to go out and ride. When I got back onto a bike after decades off, that first ride was under 10 miles. I passed out after struggling to get back home. :D
So don't feel bad. Just keep at it and you'll see improvement.

Feel the same way, just got into a pool at 5AM and all I could do is swim for 30 minutes. I haven't gone smimming in a year, shoulders and neck hurt but I am going back tomorrow.

We have an inch of powder on the road. I'd rather ride in 4 inches of snow rather than this. I'll be on the trainer for a while.

I'm still out of shape though, so I'll participate in the thread.

80. Far too hot for January! But not complaining!

80 jeeze! I could be out for a morning ride right now with those temperatures!

kiwigem 01-03-12 10:43 AM

You and me both, sir. At least you are in Arizona and have accommodating weather! Hang in there.

Yeah, we've had an unusually warm Winter, so far (for us...). Sure makes it easy to go out for a ride!

20grit 01-03-12 01:52 PM

Checked the wind chill... It apparently feels like 4 degrees outside right now. The snow is still blowing and I'm sitting at my desk getting more and more out of shape.

WNG 01-03-12 02:08 PM

It's 72 and partly cloudy outside, so no excuses, get outside and feel the burn. ;)

scozim 01-03-12 02:45 PM

It's 30 degrees right now but no wind (doesn't happen much) so I'm in contemplation mode - indoor trainer or out on the road. It's the work to get myself motivated to bundle up and ride in those temperatures that make it hard vs. indoor with Netflix and instant play.

Well the frost went away so I got in a late morning ride! Still your weather sounds nice.

Consider your self lucky that you're only out of shape. I had a back injury in 2003 that limits my riding to 15 minute sessions. I used to ride 15,000 km during our 8 month riding season. The wife says I still let out a just audible sigh, every time a bicycle goes by.

wrk101 01-03-12 03:06 PM

Hurt my back yesterday, I can't walk today..... Riding will have to wait.

"Lame" excuse. LOL!

At 51 years old, I do consider myself VERY lucky to "only be out of shape"! I do have some back pain, but the more I ride, the better that gets. My knees are a bit creaky on the long, hard climbs.

CACycling 01-03-12 03:24 PM

Rode 10 on Saturday and 11 on Monday. I'm in the out-of-shape mode as well. Legs felt good but the lungs were not happy. Saturday was the first time back in the saddle after being hit by a car while riding to work in mid-October. It felt really good to be riding. And I was really pleased that mixing it up with traffic didn't bother me. That was one thing I was apprehensive about but had no problem crossing 2 lanes of 45+ MPH traffic to get to the #2 left turn lane. FREEDOM!

First ride of the year today. Had a good year of riding but did very little in December. Amazing how fast you (I) get out of shape!!

himespau 01-03-12 03:31 PM

Planning to get a trainer at some point this winter (holiday costs being higher than expected put that on hold for the moment), so hopefully I can get that feeling out of the way when I'm bored and indoors feeling the pain from being on a trainer. Too much of a wuss to do a lot of outdoor riding in the winter.

I did 25 miles today as well:

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/62662768

I wouldn't say I'm out of shape right now. I have a lot of power and endurance, but something about my bike is really beating me (my saddle area) up and I can't figure out what. I keep feeling like every ride bruises my business. It's been this way ever since I broke my seat post a few months ago. At that time, I was completely comfortable, now, I feel like I spent 2hrs sitting on a jackhammer after every ride. So, while I may not be out of shape, something about my bike is.

scozim 01-03-12 05:06 PM

Temperature crawled up to 35 so I decided to go out. Got in 21 - 22 miles that included two repeats on a short but pretty steep hill. I was gassed after that and headed home to get back to work.
