Whats an upper end Schwinn other than a Paramount?

I'm wanting to find a good Schwinn road bike that isn't an exspensive Paramount. Any suggestions?

+1 Peruse the various on line Schwinn catalogs. I have a thing about the imported Schwinns, particularly the ones built by Panasonic. I have three, I think they are all under-rated. The Prologue to me is the ultimate sleeper in the bunch: Tange Prestige frame, beautiful paint and decal work, etc.

The late 1980s was a particularly good time for Schwinn bike wise. They had the whole Tenax line, plus higher end bikes above that (yet below the Paramount).

This is about my fifth drivetrain version on this frameset, and shortly, I am going to change it a little more. Mostly nine speed DA, with a Tiagra Hollowtech compact crank.

Dang. That is one nice bike, Thrifty Bill. And I like and appreciate the list provided by cb400bill, as I've often wondered the same as the OP. However, outside of the Super Sport, I've never seen any of these bikes outside of the catalog. Just how rare are these? I'm guessing that it is highly unlikely to find any of these at a yard sale.

I'm just really interested in finding a good Schwinn that doesn't have all Schwinn components hangin off of it. Something with Shimano or Dia-Compe goodies. Maybe even Campy?

Too broad of a question.
There are many differences, just between Paramounts from the 70's to about 1992 that are significant.
Adding in Tempo's, Circuits, Prologues, Pelotons, Super Sports, and the others makes it even harder.

Don't let that get you down, though, as I've bought nice Le Tours for $30, and there are all these models in the public domain, seeking owners. The OS Paramounts, both Waterford-made and those from both Japan and Taiwan, are sleepers, as are the Aluminum models. Lots of good buys out there.

Now, Thrifty Wild Buffalo Bill's Schwinns?
I'm waiting for him to go away for the weekend....and he just picked up a doozie.

I'm a big fan of the Peloton, especially the '86 model.

They originally came with a mix of Superbe Pro, Sugino crankset and Gran-Compe brakes, but I'm also a big fan of Dura Ace 7800.

Viva the Information Age, where everyone can attain his Rosebud with just a little money & patience. I searched Ebay & Craigslist for four years and the above two frames suddenly popped up on Ebay within the same month. I was willing to pay a LOT more for them then I ended up paying, but viva the Information Age.

I like the mid-to-late eighties Circuits, Prologues, Pelotons, Super Sports and Tempos.

Me too.
Stock 6 speed Shimano 105 (1050 series) but fully rehabbed (sold it for $320 a year or so ago):

My personal 9 speed rider, gets about 2K miles a year, mix of Shimano 105 FD/RD, Truvativ compact crank, Tektro brakes and levers, D-A shifters, Ultegra hubs with Open Pro rims. I've sold about a half dozen upgraded ones like this for $800-1200 depending on components. This one is getting the touchups freshed up and full Ultegra 6600 with Brifters over the Winter:

This will go on the block in the Spring. '87 frame powder coated in Guiness Foam Beige, all Shimano 600 tricolor except 400RL shifters, 130OLD 8 speed, Brooks saddle and tape:

Nobody has so far mentioned that the Paramount Design Group Paramounts
are wonderful bikes that are, for some reason, usually priced much lower
that Paramount bikes..........just another possibility.

A friend of mine has a fabulous 87 Prologue, I'll grab the next one I find in my size. My '81 Voyageur is a nice ride:

I never thought of a Super Sport as "upper end". It has a heavy frame and low end components.

...except in the late 80's they started making them with Columbus Tenax tubing and Shimano 600 EX. 21.5 pounds- not bad for lugged steel of that period.

I think they're talking about the 80's version which had a columbus frame and shimano 600 components

edit: beaten

BTW there's no way it weighed 21.5 at least in the size I rode (58), more like 23lbs.

lugged Schwinn Superiors are very similar to the paramounts:

I had a 1986 Super Sport. It was nice, but it felt as though it absorbed every bit of power put in it (doggy).
