Here is the latest item in the randonnization of a 1963 Frejus TdF. I considered building a rack from scratch, but couldn't figure how to make a sturdier, more functional piece than the humble Swiss Pletscher: the rack that squashed a million seat stays 40 years ago. In order to avoid that, I built a bracket that anchors to the brake pivot. I also shortened the stays so it would sit closer to the fender. Finally, I painted the lower part of the rack platform blue, to look less generic and more in keeping with the frame & fenders.


In addition to having a French name, the Frejus has some actual French parts: Mavic Module "E" rims & Berthet Lyotard #23 pedals. Most of the rest is Italian, though the seat post & bar-cons are Japanese.

I still need to work out a front rack & lighting.

Frejus is French? Are you sure it's not Corsican? Does it have 35XP1 and 22 diameter fork? This has been the had-to-have brand for all but about 8-1/2 years of my life. After Louisson Bobet.

Frejus the place is in France, but the Frejus the bicycle is Italian. The factory was in Turin (Torino).
The fork steerer is 22.2mm & the BB is Italian thread (36mm 24).

Is the crank set Campagnolo? If so, I have the same set and I thought they were of 1973 vintage...

That is the short-lived Campagnolo Sport crank. I don't think they were made for more than a few years around 1970. They are one of the few steel cotterless cranks around. I like them a lot.

The cranks aren't original to the bike. The only original parts on the frame are the Frejus-branded headset & Balilla brake calipers. Other than the paint, of course.

Looks similar to mine! I love Frejus... the Blackburn racks are my choice, when you can find them. Soma I think has a similar front rack.

I have one of those Campagnolo cranks too. Been saving it 20 years for just the right bike...

Me too. Yours is awful pretty. Nice lever covers & crank details. It is a Professional (or whatever they called their top bike), right? What year is it?
I see you are on tubulars. I decided to switch to 700c clinchers when I wound up with a pair of Mavic Module "E" rims, which look & fit like the original sew-ups. Then I blew the effect by putting on 700x27 Challenge Parigi Roubaix gum walls. Great tire for road, gravel, hardpack and mild off-road excursions, which is how I'm using the bike.

I think its mid 60s. Added the lever covers, painted the crank details, added the pump. Rest is pretty much as acquired from ebay, including tubulars. One less set of wheels to rebuild.

Frejus are some of the best looking bikes I know of. I understand they had a very low defect rate, too.

Ive got one sitting around here , no rings, like that, well I have a 42t left-over
from someone drilled the rivets out of their bigger outer .
I suppose to use it as a single ring.
an alloy Stronglight 52t ring that would fit. but not fit the 42 onto it ..
3 arm 52/36ring set off a Peugeot, and a 49t from an old bike shop owners estate sale.
Not sure what I'll do with it
