Were the plastic based Ideale saddles any good??

In my quest to build up my 80's "Tout French" bike, one item, the saddle remained elusive as I had no previous experience with French 80's saddles. I defaulted mainly to two saddles I loved in the 80's which were the Selle Italia Turbo and the Selle San Marco Concor. but they tend to be out of place on the "Tout French" bike. I checked out Ideale plastic based saddles, but I suspect that they do not ride that comfortable as I never heard of anyone raving about an Ideale 2001 or 2002. Reydel was my next possible choice but they are as hard to find in any condition (I prefer NOS saddles) as chicken lips these days. Ideal leather suspension saddles are not an option as I suspect they are as heavy as Brooks saddles....which brings me back to Ideale 2001 and 2002 saddles which are readily available at eBay. Anyone here have any experience with them and can give me an idea how they feel/ride?? For some reason, they don't seem to "look" as comfortable as my Turbo and Concor.

I used an Ideale 2001 for a few years in the late seventies. I don't recall having a problem with it. I can't tell you if you'll find it comfortable. Nobody can.

You don't have to give a reason for editing unless you want to.

Velomine is currently selling a Unicanitor plastic saddle. Don't know if that compares at all to the one you are speaking about. I'm going to do some research now on the 2001 and edumacate myself.

I found the Cinelli Unica Nitor saddle I had uncomfortable because the skirts had flared and rubbed my thighs in an uncomfortable way. I've never tried a plastic Ideale and don't see myself doing so.

If you haven't seen this already, there is a nice table with info on various Ideale saddles here: https://www.ebykr.com/2006/08/ideale-saddles-and-clips/

I don't have any personal experience with the 2000 series models. Everone's butt is unique. THe 2002 model was ridden to victory in the Tour, for whatever that's worth. They look nice. I prefer the sleeker look of the 2001 saddle compared to the 2002, but the 2002 comes with extra foam layer. Note the 2003 & 2004 models also came with titanium rails, which would be nice if you can find one.

There's also this:

I have a 2001 on my '82 PXN10. I can't say I've done centuries on it, but for the 40+ milers I have done the saddle's been a non-factor (as in I haven't had to fiddle with position, etc)

Thanks for posting the Ideale catalogue Randy, Haven't seen so much info on Ideale saddles before this one.
Interesting wieghts listed. It must include the saddle clamps shown in the drawings of the saddles. Seems like the 2002 even has a tension bolt at the nose, even though the base is plastic and I suspect resistant to any stretching. didn't know either that there's a 2003 model with Ti rails. That must cost a lot of money these days if one can find one.

The ideale 2001 won the 1975 tour de france, so it cant be too terrible to ride.

for all plastic, see the ideale 2000.

I have never ridden a 2000, might put one of these on a light weight build for a bit of a change up.

You'll save less than 8 ounces by using a plastic Ideale instead of an Ideale leather suspension saddle. An alloy framed model like the 90IR will weigh less than the plastic 2001.

I rode an Ideale 2002 leather covered saddle on my all French Peugeot PF 40. Pain, suffering! Off it came and on went an Ideale 80. Ahh! My current saddle is Brooks B 17 so you are aware of my preferences.

Well you guys made up my mind about Ideale saddles. Because of the lack of enthusiasm about Ideales, I decided to go with something different, but still French, so it will nicely fit in with my Vitus Carbone. I'll post a new thread about it as soon as it arrives and get it on my bike.

Thanks for all the input from everyone!
