Is this RALEIGH Tourist or else....Advice please
Hi all..
I brought it back to life because I liked this one. Bike has got a fork lock in working condition. This is 24" frame with 28 X 1 1/2" wheels with Sturmey Archer AG dynohub generator. Some more better pics to follow next week. Actually it looks similar to right one in the catalogue linked below but they don't mention fork lock for Tourist model...

I am no expert, but I have owned a Raleigh Tourist, or two. Both were Step Through models and both sold almost as soon as I listed them. One went to Alaska and one to California. Very nice bicycle to ride around town...

I've never seen a locking fork crown on a tourist before. That doesn't mean it never happened, but I have never seen it.
What size are the wheels? They look small to me, for a tourist that is.

It may not be a "Tourist", but it sure looks like a DL-1. I suspect something other than the North American market due to the full chain case and the fork lock. AFAIK that was never offered here.
What is the hub date? Any decals on the bike? A picture of the right hand side would be nice too. Has the bike been repainted?
From what I have read the Raleigh DL-1 design was the single most produced bike in the world, made under license in multiple countries for many years, then there are the clones.

mkeller234...This locking fork is shocking to me too... I have clearly mentioned earlier wheels are 28 X 1 1/2" tyres.

If it was a Raleigh, it would have heron logos all over it, most prominently on the chain ring. With a full chain case, yours is covered, but does the chain ring look anything like this?
(Note the shape of the heron head in three locations around the chain ring. That is the Raleigh logo. If you have a Raleigh, that shape will show up in several places on the bike.

You'll also find little pictures of Sir Walter Raleigh stamped on the stem, cranks and other places, maybe a centimeter high. Are there three holes for the headbadge in a triangle about 3.5 cm high?

From what I see, it has Tourist written all over it ---- the wheel size, the B-33 saddle, rod brakes. It's the first I've seen with a locking fork though.

India was a basically under British Colonial rule until 1947? There were plants in India that built Raleigh bicycles under license. I can see that being the case here. In fact Eastman still builds roadsters to this day that are direct copies of the Raleigh DL-1, just not quite as good a quality.

Ok, sorry. I wasn't sure of the breadth of the question. I've always refered to Raleigh's 28" Roadsters as DL-1s or Tourists and never made much distinction between the two.

When Raleigh branded a bike with Tourist....the factory box was shipped as a DL-1. Tourists had different decals only. The 28 X 1 1/2 wheels are odd, they're almost always are 28 X 1 3/4. Atul...is there a bead size on the rims or a E4 designation? Anything?

No, not true. My DL-1 came with 28 x 1 1/2. And I never heard of a distinction between DL-1 and Tourist. They were always the same from everything I've seen here on BF and other places.

I am having 'Perry' bicycle chain on this... What brand is that? tried to Google it.....couldn't find anything..Is this a known brand of bicycle chain? Did they stop production?

The lack of standardization of rim sizes will remain an eternal source of frustration for all future bike enthusiasts. Even Sheldons charts are incomplete.

DL-1/Tourist was the Raleigh Factory designation, from what I gather some were marketed under different names in some countries. They were all roadsters. I have some pictures of a 1965 DL-1 with Dunlop 28x1 1/2 rims, AG hub, full chain case, locking fork, rod brakes, DBU and combo taillight/reflector. It doesn't say "Tourist" anywhere on it. Perhaps they were still called Tourist but just didn't badge it as such.

My 1953 Raleigh Superbe has a rear dyno hub, chain case and locking fork, but 26" wheels and sidepull brakes. Just to muddy the water.

Don't you have millions of Indian-made bikes that look just the same? The Raleigh bikes used better quality steel than the Indian bikes, but otherwise, they were the same.

It is a DL-1, but not a Tourist. I associate Tourist as DL-1 without an enclosed chain case at least in US due to import weight restrictions. About two years ago a collection of Raleigh DL-1's sold here. They bought over the years by a collector who purchased them on several trips to England and had them shipped here. While they were DL-1's they were not Tourists. Many were unusual.
