to repeat an over-used term: awesome!
Why don't they still have floats like that? And the paper hats? Luckily, we do still have those bikes...some of them.

The Thin Man 01-25-12 06:20 PM

I like how even the men of the cloth are puffing away on smokes (2:15 in).
Great video.

Amazing. Jerseys have definitely gone down hill since those days, that's for sure.

Right. You can actually read the sponsor names. And great colors too. I have always liked the Mercier jersey.

Was that Rudi Altig in the World Champions jersey? Which would make it 1962 Tour?

One of the best in a long time!

Edit: A Louis Malle film. That explains it.

That really is an awesome vid, thanks for posting the link OP.

That is an absolutely charming little video. I can't believe I just sat there and watch all 18 minutes.

Kanegon 01-26-12 10:29 AM

Just love those shiny skinny bikes! I watched the TOUR on ESPN once, but for whatever reason, it didn't look anything like the Malle film. Do they still share water and food with teammates (and even rivals)? Are fans still allowed to give the riders a boost? And stuffing newspaper in their jerseys for the high pass, can't imagine that now. The director implies that the guys collapsing toward the end were on dope...would have never guessed without seeing the transcript.

Excellent. Vintage 1962

SumoMuffin 01-26-12 11:48 AM

Great watch, thanks for posting. It's amazing how much the sport has changed since then. It would have been so much more awesome to compete back then.

Still happens. People still hand them out, too.

No helmets, throwing litter as they go, peeing while riding the bike... It just doesn't get much better than this. You d'man ilikebikes!

:roflmao: I figured if anyone was going to agree with and admit to that kind of behavior, it would be you Justin. ;)

ericbaker 01-26-12 02:08 PM

loved it... the end credits say 1966

Kanegon 01-26-12 02:52 PM

sorry to ask but, what do they do to errr, pee nowadays? is it physically possible to urinate while cranking your legs? Or is it strictly a two man maneuver?

ilikebikes 01-26-12 10:51 PM

I'm REALLY happy you guys are enjoying it! but if it wasn't for member 'Terrors' who sent it to me we prob wouldn't be watching and enjoying this fine piece of cycling history! Thanks 'Terrors' :thumb:

Yes, today they still take a road side relieving break. Most of the time it's in a group so that they don't have a hard time catching back up. I've watched a few tours on TV within the last few years and have not seeing the peeing-while-riding maneuver.
Awesome video, I saw this same vid with English subtitles somewhere else a few weeks back. I enjoyed the part where the riders scrambled into a store and picked out bottles of biere, les bon vin, le champagne!
