Athena RD ID?

Can anyone ID this derailleur?

https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=170777812659

The seller says its from 1985 but to my knowledge Athena was introduced in the late 80's ('88?). I just busted one that I IDed as one of these:

https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.as...4af7d&Enum=108

And the one the seller is listing looks very similar but it says "Athena" on the cage. It also seems to be the model with a bolt-type position adjuster rather than the one in the last image of the above link. Can anyone say what era this was? I'm running 7-speed right now.

Thanks

Someone just mentioned to me in an earlier post that the version you show (I have the exact same RD) is a second gen Athena, most likely later 80's then....

No way the ebay example is from '85, probably later than '95. The slant parallelogram (suntout patent) design didnt start for campy until early 90's and it was several years later before they started with painting the model name on the derailler which really takes the fun&skill out of ID'ing them!

ok, so will this work with a 7 speed friction set up? How many speeds was it made for at the time?
or even a 7 speed synchro set-up? I'm assuming at this point, ergo had been introduced.

Yes, just about anything will work with a friction setup as long as the derailleur will travel the width of the cogs. I am using a 6/7 speed Chorus derailleur on a 10 speed cassette in friction with no problems. For campy Syncro and Syncro 2 didn't work very well when all the parts were brand new, carefully matched, and carefully adjusted.

The Athena derailleur above is a mid 90's 8 speed ergo version.

I have a 7-sp Athena RD that is available.
If you run Syncro, do you have the right insert?
It'll run friction just fine, though.

I'll PM you and you can email me back.

This. My guess 95-97, forget the exact date Campagnolo started putting the group name on the derailleurs.

For friction systems you can use pretty much any decent derailleur... don't have an Athena kicking around as all I have is much older stuff which also works great on friction systems as his is what it was designed for.

Same here, never had a problem, once all the parts were together.
