SoCal and Centurions,,,

I've been operating remotely from the San Diego area this week and have seen a TON of nice vintage centurions everywhere I look. Lots of everyday riders in fantastic shape!!! It's been a real treat - I'm hating going back to Chicago and the sub-freezing temps.

Centurion was the house brand of Western State Imports, based in Camarillo just north of L.A. They also did Diamond Back BMX bikes then, which led to Diamond Back mountain bikes, which led to them morphing Centurion into Diamond Back road bikes. Progress marches on.

I liked living in Sandy Ego a while back, but the summer heat can be brutal. I'm happy to be in the Pacific Northwest, where I can ride year round without the fear of melting. Fear of fungus has replaced that, though.

Chicago seems like a nice place to me…perhaps not this time of year, but a great city nonetheless. This forum seems to have facilitators everywhere, so if you see a Centi that you want, put it out there, you never know.

Summer heat in San Diego? Sure, if you live inland. I grew up in the beach area, usually about 10-15 degrees cooler than the hottest inland areas. Where I live now is at least 5-8 degrees warmer than at the coast, and I am still within sight of the ocean (well if you stand on my roof).

But it usually isn't that humid, that helps.

There are a lot of Centurions here, the original ones that looked like Raleigh Grand Prix knock offs were very common during the bike boom, my local Schwinn dealer sold them because he couldn't get enough Schwinns.

Growing up in So. CA, several of the Schwinn Dealers in S.E. L.A. County and Orange County carried Centruion road bikes. I used to see scads of the things when I was riding up and down Pacific Coast Highway back in the 80s and 90s.

Ya, I've noticed a lot of the Centurions that I've seen, have decals from west coast shops, including my '88 Master........my brother bought it while in the Military back in the late 80's, stationed in 29 Palms

I hardly ever see a Centurion in my neck of the woods. However, we do have probably the highest concentration of Marinoni than any other location in North American.
