I'm a SISsy

I recently acquired a Tesch Hwy 101 in a trade which was equipped with Dura Ace 7400 7-speed SIS, including a RD-7401 derailleur and 7400 UG freewheel (not freehub). I enjoyed the SIS function of the DT shifters enough to be tempted to take it to the next level. Encouraged by the terrific C&V threads (thanks miamijim!) on fitting 9 or ten gears on a 126 OLD frame spacing I spaced a Shimano FH-6402 freehub for 126, added a DA 7700 9-speed HG cassette, a DA RD-7402 derailleur I had tucked away, and the SL-7900 10-speed downtube shifters, and voila! The CTC Rear Shifting web page indicated that I would end up achieving a sprocket pitch of 4.36 which matches well with the S9-speed cassette spacing of 4.35 without using the alternative cable route.

I have ridden the bike a few times now and have not had to adjust anything since the initial set-up. It seems to work very well. I still like my Simplex Retrofriction/Campy NR/UG 6-speed best! And now for some pictures of my little red hot rod...

Beautiful bicycle! Well done. And, if you reference to the "next level" means Brifters, go for it.

That is a beautiful machine. I had a bit of difficulty figuring out just what you were saying about the upgrade, but after a few read throughs I got it. I am not certain I would put brifters on that bike, I think it looks great just as it is.

Thanks for the props on the conversion. There's a slight difference between Dura Ace and 600 Ultegra hub shells, Dura Ace shells are different in that the distance between the low gear cog and flange is smaller thus allowing for more optimal dish. 600 Ultegra hubs will have more dish.

Thanks Bianchigirl, glad you're checking in! The upgrade was to trade the Dura Ace 7400 freewheel hub for the Shimano 600 rear freehub to upgrade from 7-speed to 9-speed. I guess you could call it a "9 of 10 on 8" upgrade, while sticking with the 126 spacing. No brifters intended - I like the downtube SIS shifting!

And thanks again, everyone, for the kind words. I rode up my local hill climb today on the Tesch - it performed flawlessly.

Jim

Beautiful bike, definitely a classic, and I think it looks so great like that because you kept the DT shifters
Its cool you upgraded and still kept those on a bike like this

Love it! I'm a brifter guy but I really like about those 10 speed DA downtube shifters. Had to edit my post...thought they were 9 speeds at first.

Nice-looking bike and a cool implementation!

One thing I really liked about SIS when I was first learning to use DT shifters was that I could reach down -- "click!" -- and put my hand back on the bar quickly. Now that I've gotten more comfortable with them, I don't mind spending a little more time down there if I don't line up a friction shift perfectly. But I'm still fond of how quickly and easily you can get the job done with SIS.

That is gorgeous! Great build. I love the classic style of the DT shifters mixed with the functionality of extra gears. The yellow flourishes on the nose of the turbo saddle and rim decals really work well with the yellow frame decals, too.

P.S. The stays are nicely brazed at the rear dropout. Do you have a close up of the seat cluster?

Thanks again for all the great comments! I did like doing the trick of using the 10-speed shifters with the 8-speed derailleur to shift the 9-speed cassette properly!

Since you ask, here's a close up of the seat cluster. There's more pictures in my photobucket album also.
