Big Bangkok Vintage Ride in March - A Few Snapshots From A Ride There This Morning
The issue of vintage road bike interest in Thailand has come up a few times now. After being here for a visit, I can fill a few more holes.
- Yes, the fixter craze is in full swing. I've seen teenagers all over the country riding mainly cheap new fixies from Taiwan or China. While sitting in a taxi at a traffic light after midnight last night, I saw a pack of about 25 came riding past. But, I've seen a Cinelli Mash and a fair amount of conversions as well.
- The vintage interest seems to be very strong. I was at a good antiques market last night, and there were a few guys selling a lot of nice Japanese parts, as well as a few nice frames (Nagasawa, Cherubim). One of the sellers had a nice Silk, and they were well versed in the Japanese love of French cyclotouring. They had a beautiful Toei catalogue that I'd never seen, and that was lustworthy.
- Many of you saw that link (provided by Leica Lad and s70rguy) to a big vintage ride last year in Bangkok:

Well, the same group had a mini gathering this morning at Silpakorn Arts University to take photos and drum up interest in the next big ride, which will be held on 11 Mar 12, starting at a large art gallery across from the MBK mall. They expect to have over 500 riders!
Anyway, although there was a significant language barrier, they were very welcoming and seemed to be pretty similar to vintage riders in the States. Some bikes were very basic, some were off topic, some were a bit of a mish mash, and some were stunning. Just like here. Given the additional challenge of getting items shipped there, they seemed to be doing pretty well! My only complaint was that they all parked their bikes so that you couldn't see the drive train side.
Here are a few snapshots from this morning:

Cinelli Riviera
Nice old Dawes:
A Nice Alps:
A nice Roman mixte and a Liberia:
So, who wants to go to Bangkok for the March ride? 500 riders!
Unfortunately, I return to cold and snowy Chicago tomorrow....
Until then, cheers from hot, steamy Bangkok, where the food's spicy and the beer's cold,
Bob

Looks awesome. My girlfriend and I spent a few months backpacking in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia a couple years back and we loved it. Next time I go back I'll be taking my bike friday though, so I wouldn't be riding C&V.

I love Thailand! Trained Thai Army Rangers outside Nakat-see-tamarat (that's how it's pronounced, not spelled) in the mid 1990's.
Instead of parachuting from aircraft during training, most jumps were from hot air balloons.
Funny side note, when we got there, we were told to never to fly in a Thai military helicopter........for any reason! We also brought our US issue parachutes, in case you are wondering about that!
Of all the places I went, the Thais were the nicest people we ever encountered.
Anyway, sorry for the derail!
