Schwinn Super Le Tour

I just bought this Schwinn Super Le Tour yesterday for $200 off of CL. I tried asking $175 for, but the seller wouldn't budge. It is a 53 cm frame, and it fits me perfectly. It's a all Shimano drivetrain except for the Campagonlo friction shifters. I still don't know what I'm going to put on the bike. It has a Blackburn rack. I think I'm going to put on some Newbaums cloth tape with hemp twine, and then clear coat it. But I don't know what color to use. Well anyways here are the pictures.

That's a nice quality ride and it should serve you very well. A cleaning and wax will bring out a nice shine. You might want to check that your stem is not beyond the upper limit indicator (can't really tell if it's just a tall stem or not inserted far enough). Might also want to check on the fraying front brake cable, but it looks workable to my eyes. I like the black/chrome mix among the parts. I'd stick with black on the tape. So how does it ride?

It rides amazing smooth and fast. It has 18 speeds which is great. The owner said that he just put in new bearing for the crank. It's also nice, and quiet. No strange unwanted sounds. The saddle that is on there right now is ok, but I want a better one. Any recommendations for a nice looking, and comfortable saddle?

Well, if it were me, I'd keep the bike in it's vintage serviceable condition and get an old brooks b15 or fujita belt saddle for it (in black with the same age and character as the rest of the bike). I'd probably go black or match the rack for the bottle cage, then call it done as your new faithful companion. Improve as it needs things, but ride the snot out of it all year. Over the next winter, then you could do more futzing if you felt it necessary (by then you'll know exactly what you want).

That bike has an interesting mix of parts. It seems to me that some of it is more modern than the frame. I have a 1978 Super Le Tour 12.2 that looks similar but doesn't have any Italian parts or Aero brakes. It has a Shimano 60 FD and this https://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/...286100%29.html RD. You have acquired a very interesting bike for sure.

Yeah the previous owner said he got it back in the 80's. Then he fixed it up with more modern parts, and stuck it in the attic.

I wouldn't call it a bargain, but it's a good quality Schwinn for sure. The stem is one of the more interesting upgrades, I haven't seen many .883" stems with that style clamp. I'd like to find one like that for my Voyageur 11.8. As for the tape, I'd probably go with black or a deep red and skip the twine, but anything will look better than that vinyl stuff that's on it now.

Nice looking bike but I see a few things I am not certain of. Are the chainwheels biopace?

I'm not sure what biopace is.

Would I just tape the cloth wrap off like I would do with cork? or what?

Are the chainwheels oblong? If they are, then it might be a Biopace.

Some folks like 'em (I do), some don't.

Oh, nice bike!

As mentioned above, ride it often. That way you get a better idea on what to change.

Oh in that case the bike has a normal crankset. I'm still messing around with the seat positions to find one that fits me well.

I think Bianchigirll mentioned it because of the shape of the small ring, it looks pretty "not round" in the photo. If you spin the crank (freewheel it backwards if the chain is on) while watching it from above, you'll see that it's not round if you have a Biopace setup. No big deal either way, I happen to love them.

The cloth tape can be taped off like cork, but I usually use a wrap of hockey tape, sometimes in a contrasting color. Everybody has their own preferences... Here's an example where I didn't use anything to bind the end except for the tape's adhesive and a thin overall coat of clear shellac (to match the white tape to the off-white hoods and cables.)

That is a nice touch.

I was wrong. I didn't even realize that the crank was biospace.
