'74 MASI GC Restoration Thread

Well, a few years ago, I won on ebay an interesting "Guerciotti" that, in fact, was actually a '74 (or close) Italian built Masi GC.

I have finally got around to pulling it out of storage and getting it sorted. I will post some pics shortly but to get you caught up on the original discussion here are some links.

You need to set the pics to anyone, versus just you.

Give that a try.

You can't link the whole Flickr page just the photo. So click on the photo, then properties and copy and past that url. Then you can paste that in the image thing here. Also, you might have to open the photo in a different size then the one on the default Flickr page. Don't know why, but the photo on the first page is sometimes blocked from being linked.

And the flicker link: photos

Retrofit, thanks!

I have tried so many ways, and it still won't allow me to post, which "share" did you use on flickr, the link or the BBcode?

Drillium Dude 02-17-12 11:54 PM

Interesting - I wonder why the PO from whenever decided to re-badge it? I mean, those are obviously genuine early Guerciotti decals.

I'll be interested to see details of this when/if the paint is going to be stripped for a full restoration. Just the fork's finish has me questioning all the kool-aid drinking Masi-shouters ;)

I'm not yet discounting the idea of owning a GC someday, but this thread might finally convince me to either give up or give in :)

As you can see by the pics (sorry :( ) it is a twinplate fork crown that was filled when it was painted as a Guerciotti.

I want to remove the bronze filler and have the crown re-plated. I am thinking of my dremel tool and starting with the grinding stones, I figure that the bronze will be softer than the steel. Any other ideas?

Thanks for being patient.

It is so tempting though.

I'll have you look at one when you come out here this summer.

Don't get me wrong, I want the right one, for obvious reasons.

I just want to get it right.

There's a 1974 Gran Criterium we can take a look at.

Stick with it VJP, we'd love to have a build thread with your bicycle as a focus.

Neither.:D

I used "Actions" selected "View All Sizes" then when the window opened with the largest pict I just copied the image address (not the address in the address field of the browser window).

In Safari its a control click on the image to bring up the contextual to either copy the image address directly, or open the image (only) in a new window and then copy the image address. (Hope that all makes sense.)

vjp 02-18-12 12:03 AM

I believe that it was a '74 Sammontana Team bike as there is yellow paint in the seat tube. It is possible that a pro who rode for Sammontana then moved on to a Guerciotti team and had his bike "disguised". In one of the seat stay caps there is a very faint "NINO" in faded script.

The twin plate was filled and then sand blasted and painted so the finish is NOT smooth. Originally only the plates were unpainted and just chrome.

Please do not do that.

I think considering it is a Masi you should send the fork to a frame maker and have him remove the filler. I am assuming you are going to refinish the frame anyway.
