Great Story to share

So I was doing my late in the day recovery ride which is a 10 mile loop or 2 laps with a one mile out and back roller around my area. I spotted a fairly heavy middle aged guy riding and approaching me from the opposite way. When I got to the out and back roller section, the guy I saw earlier started following me. I was thinking this guy wants a little race. Well, there was no way some weekend out of shape rider was going to stay with me (I was riding my Colnago master equilateral bty) so I started pushing the pace. To my suprise, the guy was sucking my wheel pretty good. I pushed some more on some of the little hills and, although he was huffing and puffing, he was still hanging with me. When we got to the end of the street and rode back, we started talking about my bike. We soon started talking about my favorite topic...vintage racing. He asked me if I was ever a professional racer...I was going to say yes, I was on the 7-11 team..but I told the truth...no. Being polite, I returned the question and he told me that "oh yeah, I was on the 7-11 team for about 5 years. At that point i asked him....are you Harvey Nitz? Yes it was Nitz!!! The next day I rode with him for about 30 miles. Seems that he is finally getting back into bike riding after many years away. Man, he had so many great stories that after 30 miles I still wanted to keep riding with him.

Didn't you meet with him after buying one of his old "Huffy" 7-11 bikes a few years ago?

Good for him getting back, and good for you finding an interesting new friend.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Kinda reminds me of the time about 10 years ago when I thought I was pretty damn good and saw and older guy that looked pretty fit up ahead. I decided I'd use his draft to pass him at a pretty fast pace, but he hopped right on my wheel and just buried me. Of course, I later found out it was John Allis when I started working at his bike shop.

Have any good 7-11 stories that Nitz shared with you?

His sister was very attractive in the 70's too.

I am trying to remember, I think she married Ralph Therrio.

Remember, its hard to drop those old racers, they know how to suffer when required.

I had a guy witha gigantic beer belly, 20 years older than I, put me to shame on the road. After trailing him for a mile or two I almost exploded. Fat or old doesn't necessarily mean a thing.

Nice Story! Had some "old" guy blow past me on a 3-speed...I think, went by so fast I couldn't quite tell!!! We have a local gent, up there in years, and one legged (nice new sports/athletic prosthesis) that regularly blows past me. I just think of him when I'm feeling a bit wimpy!

Thanks for a great story and kudos to you for having the ride and discussion with Mr. Nitz. Too bad someone had to smell up a good thread.

Great story! Good thing you told the truth instead of "Yes, I used to ride for 7-11."

It amazes me when I read one of these former pro threads how often the former pro is no longer thin. I would think they would have put on some lbs, but not have a bad case of dunlap disease.

Glad you enjoyed that! He was riding a scott bike. in fact, the second ride I did with him, the next day, he had a scott TT bike he was riding. He told me that one of the guy he is coaching just gave him both bikes! He told me ALOT of great vintage race stories. One was about Rebecca Twigg who was a good friend of Nitz. Seems like a bit later in her career, she was training for the olympics and was competing against another gal to get on the team--not sure what type of race it was-some sort of track thing- anway she was on the track with Eddy B and she was constantly slower than the other gal by about 8 seconds. Harvey shows up and is watching her ride. Eddy B couldnt figure out what was wrong so he asked harvey to see if he could figure it out. Well, he noticed that she was riding in a gear that wasnt correct. He had to do alot of persuading but finally convinced her to try it and it worked!! She made the team and the other gal got cut. He also had some great Chris Carmichael stories as well as many of the other great american racers of the 80s. P.S. I think he will be showing up the the handbuilt bike show in a couple weeks as Sachs and Serotta made several of his bikes and a few may be on display at the show
