I made a mistake. In attempting to replace a cable I dismantled the Shimano Exage Country right shifter body on my old Trek 800 a few weeks ago and am now guessing at reassembly. I've searched the internet for hours (including this site) and contacted North American and Australian Shimano via email (to no avail). I am hoping that someone out there might point me in the direction of a diagram showing an exploded view of this component. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Chris, the fact that you took the time to reply is truly appreciated. I'd gathered what I could from the (L) shifter, it turns out they are just different enough (some additional parts on the (R)), that I'm stalled. Anyhow, again, thanks very much for the input.

I have a parts catalog that shows an exploded diagram of the shifter but.......
I can't get photobucket to recognize the file and.....
it only shows that the shift lever lifts off the mounting plate. It doesn't appear to come apart anymore than that.
I'll keep at it and if I can make it work I'll post it here. (Keep in mind I'm an idiot and am easily distracted)

The lack of response is partly due to the lack of technical information on disassembly of these rapid fire model shifters. The mechanism is basically identical from 200GS, Exage, Alivio, Deore, for those generation shifters.
Not recommended to take apart one of these, as the task of reassembly is nearly impossible with two hands and basic hand tools. I took one apart to clean and get working, only to toss the parts into a bag and cursed a lot.
As you've surmised, lots of small springs, shims, etc. Best bet is to have an assembled one nearby and compare as you carefully loosen and partly disassemble the complete one.

I was away from electricity for a week or so, thankful to return and find some hope for a diagram as well as eloquent commiseration. Thanks, and if anyone ever finds the treasure map to this particular problem, it would much appreciated.

Oh no. Good luck in your search. If you find a diagram please post it up here. But. . . I'd be checking ebay for a similar replacement.

I'm not sure how much yours differs from the Deore DX unit, but I found this guide a few years ago, and it helped me to get a similar unit going again.

OK. I will redouble my efforts to post the scan. It's a PDF and photobucket won't recognize the file on my pc.
I get back Monday and will work on it.

Can you change the scanner settings to scan as a .jpg, png, .gif, or .bmp? Those should play nice with photobucket.

If need be, open it up and take a screenshot on your computer, it won't be the highest DPI, but it's a rather simple way to get something like that converted. Mac or PC?
