Campagnolo SHAMAL wheels - what do I need to know??
Ok... So I'm selling three (possibly 4) of my bikes to pay for one more high end build...
I have always liked Shamal wheels... I have began hunting for a pair... I prefer to buy locally but may have to reach out to the Bay to find them...
Are there any tips anybody has? Ie, models to avoid, things to look for, common issues?
They typically go for $400-500 so I want to be sure I'm not getting ripped off...
Here's a set on eBay now..
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Campagnolo-Shamal-C-Record-clincher-wheelset-/270925005693?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f1463837d

Can't speak to tips and the like but I'm fairly certain they're roughly the same as Gipiemme Tecnos. You might find those cheaper.

Everyone like their looks for sure, but I heard that they're kinda heavy??
I wonder too if they require special spoke washers and nipples as they're certainly pretty deep rims.

My tip regarding the older Shamals: Get different wheels. They are overpriced, overweight, and hard to get parts for.

If you like the look (deep dish aluminum on traditional hubs) you can also look for original Mavic Cosmic which has their fabulous hubs or build wheels with the older CXP 30 rims. Or look for same-vintage Campy Ventos which have exactly the same rim as Shamal but different hub internals.

This really isn't the right forum to ask this question...you'll get a lot of "they're ugly" comments and criticism from people who probably haven't ridden them. I'd take this question to serotta forums or the road cycling forum.
I didn't know Gipiemme was still active...interesting they're sourcing to Campagnolo.

I built up a pair of Mavic CXP30 wheels, as stated they (and the Shamals) are not light
but they are bullet proof.
Not sure about the shamal but the mavic requires a special nipple washer which is difficult to find,
although not nearly as difficult as the ones for Wolber profile A rims.

If you're also considering other Aero tubular rims, you might also check out Wolber's Profil 20's. They are mid height smooth arrow profile aero rims that build into very strong wheels and do not require any special nipples or washers. plus they're still pretty cheap to find as NOS rims out there. Built up a set using DT Aerolite oval spokes and they must be the stiffest rims I ever owned, plus in 28H, pretty light. Just a bit heavier than my 32 spoke GL330s. Similar weight to my lightweight 19mm clincher wheelset. They look really good on most mid to late 80's bike.
Just a suggestion if Shamals do not work out for you.

Having despaired of finding a set in Germany at a reasonable price, for my Olmo build I stuck some Campagnolo stickers on my 40mm deep Felt TTR2 wheelset.
I absolutely love these wheels.
They're fake, but hey ho. You can see the cheeky Campy decal on the bottom of the rim.

C&V Shamals I've seen:
Were both 9-sp and 8-sp.
Were both tubular and clincher.
Had a silver finish, rounded bulbous hubset, and a polished finish hubset.
C&V Ventos I've seen:
Were 8-sp, clincher, and had a highly polished, almost mirror-like finish on very angular hubset.
Both:
They are not that heavy. My Mavic Cosmic Elite's rear is heavier, the front is lighter.
They stay true very well, and are trued only by taking off the tire and rim strip.
I've seen various logo sets on them, blue and mostly fuscia. Mine were screened on, not decals.
Nothing looks like them, for the most part. They ride well, are moderately stiff.
They made a nice whirring sound at about 20mph and higher.
Other riders thought they were very cool in a pace line.
Kids in a certain neighborhood here called them "scrapers."
As in, "Hey mister, you got a scraper bike!"
As far as value, that's in the brain of the buyer.
I sold my 8-sp set, to a buyer in Taiwan.
Excellent money.
Figure $350-$500.
Modern Ventos are placed lower on the ladder than modern Shamals.

Gipiemme techno look like crap.
I have 3 sets of campy wheels. A pair of shamals, ventos and 1996 atlantas. They're Pretty awesome looking wheels and perform pretty good too. I dOnt really think they're that heavy. Recently k sold a set to another forums member and he said that they were great. They AlsO stay very true as well.
Price is anywhere from 500-1200 for shamals with c-record/record hubs. I've seen NOS go for 13-1400. I would definitely say try out a set. Worse comes to worse u just throw them back on eBay. There is still a high demand for these wheels. They still go for alot because of the way they look on a bike and cause they're campy.
The only downside I've had is u gotta be careful on super windy days. A couple times I was ridIng across a bridge with no hands and a gust of wind almost made me spill cause it pushed my steering to one side. I was very lucky that day. U will notice the bike pushing a bit to your left or right On windy days.
Other than that they work great for me. As for the people that are hating on the wheels. It's probably cause they can't afford it.

I had a pair of 1st gen Shamals. Maybe a bit heavy, but when riding .. I loved them. They went like the wind, so to speak.
Then I broke a spoke. Where to get the right bladed spoke? Problems ... also, the aluminum rims seemed so thin-walled, they dent easily, if handled roughly.
Other than that, great wheels!
Edit: I notice I have 531 posts! Memorable ...

Looks to be in very good ysed condition. Unless they were changed, the skewers kinda give a good indication on how well the wheels were treated by the last owner and these look to be in very good condition. There's definitely some wear on the braking surface, but I cannot judge from the pics on how much or how bad they are in that area, but I suspect there's still a lot of life left on these wheels braking surface-wise.
Just put in you max bid and see what happens....you understand, of course that the bids for something this popular will pour in in the last 2 minutes of the auction. The numbers you see there does not mean anything yet....so bid bravely if you really want these wheels.
