websterrr what size is that? If you ended up with a 66cm 3.0 Series, I think you ended up with MY bike by mistake. Get my address so you can send it to me!

Just a 63 i'm afraid. Haven't actually pulled the trigger on it myself...

Could be a factory re-spray. In the old days Cannondale would repaint your frame for 100 bucks. Or it could have been a DIY job.

I'm pretty sure that's a connondale black lightning... or am I missing something? Is that mud or splattered paint?

It still has the fd mount attached, that's good news

If that is a true Black Lightning I'm guessing that is a swapped headset. The BL was black. Everything was black.

A black lightning is only a black lightning with the black Suntour components, otherwise it's just an SR. That frame also doesn't say black lightning on the top tube, so was probably never a black lightning.

The SR300 was offered in black in '89, though speckles aren't specified.

That's not a Black Lightening. It's the very rare and elusive Starry Night edition. See if you can pick out the constellations!

I still cant figure out if it's mud or paint... it's killing me

On my frame, it only says black lightning on the rear triangle--bottom tube, on the drive side. I think that's the only place it actually says "black lightning" on the frame

Right. Here's mine, an '88 criterium series (same frame as the Black Lightning):

Nothing on the chain stay, it's got a shimano 600 headset, a black stem I don't recognize, and the neon mud paint job.

Not sure what's going on with this one, but I'd love to build it up.

What derailleurs and shifters are you running on it?

I've been thinking about spraying my frame matte black with some glossy black decals like the black inc. line cannondale came out with.

But I'd hate to mess with the originality of the frame--it being a black lightning.

Thanx, glad you like it. The RD is a Shimano 600 moved by 7sp indexed Shimano levers. Common setup for that year. Gearing is a Nashbar road double 39/53 and a 12-28 Shimano HG. Shifting is almost intuitive, quick and smooth.

Decals for the Black Lightning are available through the Vintage Cannondale site for 25-30$USD.

glad i stumbled onto this thread... hopefully someone here can help me out..

i picked this cannondale up last weekend. i can't find any numbers on it to tell me what year and what size it is. can anyone help me out? any one have an idea what it may be worth? hopefully i didn't over pay for it. i pumped up the tires and it seems to ride fine. have to find different pedals fo rit though. my feet don't fit the toe clips properly.

oh and i guess one more question is, how original is this thing??

thanks in advance..

Drivetrain and brakes look original. I'm guessing that is a '87-88 R600. I'm also guessing it is a repaint (wont hurt this particular bike's value too much) by looking at the cable guides and nature of paint scratch/chip. These did have trouble with durability of paint finish but this looks like a respray. Nice bike. I'm a fan of these so it's not any stretch for me to value it a bit more than others. With that equipment, it's a sweety.

It was. Today, they along with Trek command a premium on the open market. The Shimano 600 group is the equivalent to Ultegra. Good stuff. Yours looks more like the '87 model year.

This is another sign of it being a repaint.

paint is super thin and has some kind of touch up paint on it. doubt its a repaint. and if by some chance it is a repaint then someone spent some good money doing it because it sure isn't from a spray can. then someone would have had to go and buy all the decals and install them too. not saying i'm 100% sure it hasn't been repainted but if you saw it in person i think you would agree with me.

it even has the original bike store decal still on it..
