$1499 Nishiki Altron on ebay, Really???

Really, a $1499 Nishiki Altron? I keep tabs on Nishikis on ebay and the prices have been pretty high for almost everything, but the latest post of a Nishiki Altron (1987 I think) is ridiculous. IMHO, The aluminum Altron was not the greatest riding bike, not as nice as the Tange steel, Kawamura made, Nishiki models like the International, but that's my opinion. I'm trying to figure out why this bike commands a price very close to a new, all carbon road bike.
Don't know if the link will attach OK but here it is.

Why the high asking price?

The seller is the Budget Bicycle Center.

Last time I looked, you can ask anything you want for your bike.

What's the point if no one will buy it at that price?
Marketing - This is a form of advertisement as you may look at other stuff they have for sale.
Trolling for offers - It can't hurt to call the store, and see if they would take less. Bypass ebay fees.
Getting the highest price - With any auction, you only know what the second highest bidder is willing to spend. I private sale determines the maximum price.

It looks to me like nothing has changed at Budget Bicycle Center in the 25 years since I lived in that neighborhood.

While their prices are outrageous, they seem to hook a fish every week. They recently sold a XXL Waterford Paramount, with all 105DT components, for $900, plus high shipping. Interesting strategy if you have the stomach for it. I couldn't do it.

They also weren't interested in the correct year and catalog information. When I suggested the build year was 1987 (not 1983 as stated) and that they could search for a 1987 catalog that does contain the model, they wrote back like they knew the information in their ad was wrong.

Agree with roccobike - interested in steel Nishikis.

I bought a part from BBC, though not at auction. It was an extra-long brake straddle cable to work around the seatpost on a mixte, not an easy thing to find, and they seemed to be the only source. Something like $10 shipped, so not really unreasonable on a rare bike part. But their prices for complete bikes are not just high but absurd.

We have a dealer in Chicago like that; they have NOS 80s bikes that they have held onto for years, increasing the prices every so often. (Nothing that special as far as I've seen.) They actually seem to sell one once in a while!
