Seat bags on vintage race bikes
Was wondering what everyone else uses on there vintage race bikes for carrying inner tubes and tool kits while riding. I hate the ideal of putting a modern seat wedge on my vintage colnago. But I don't want to be 20 miles out and
Not have a tube and inflator. Curious to see what everyone else
Has on their bikes

I use a small nylon canvas bag, the simplest I can find, usually black. Back in the day we put our spare tubular in a sock, lashed under the seat with an old toe strap.

I am looking for some cheap small seat bags, but lately I have been thinking more along the lines of just one or two small sippered pouches set up so I can just grab one, tuck it into a jersey pocket and go.
On my tubular bikes I usually have the spare tucked/strapped under the seat and the C02 in a frame mounted holder.

Isn't that what jersey pockets are for?
For all of my bikes I've always looked for the absolute smallest bag I could shoehorn a tube and patch kit into. I hate the saggy/baggy ones you find in most LBSs. Really, you should be able to get everything you need into something about the size of two packs of playing cards. I've always carried (and swung!) a Silca pump.

A little bit of both, depending on the bike. The "handlebar" bag is also a "saddle" bag.

On my '88 Prologue, I have a Cannondale seat pack of around the same age as the bike.

Shorts, yes. Never owned a jersey (they don't make them in extra, extra portly!)

In the bike boom for club rides and races often nothing more than a toe clip strap holding a spare tubular tire to the saddle rails was used along with a Silca pump on the frame. People who wanted to carry more used small saddle bags and/or handebar bags.
I use the ubiquitous nylon seat bags but over the years I've become less of a weight weenie and use a Carradice lowsaddle longflap so I can bring rain gear, a sweater, etc.

I have a variety of solutions. This is an older Trek bag on an '83 Fuji del Rey:
but I've also been known to carry a handlebar bag (vintage Novara) on the same bike:
But since the post was about saddle bags, I'll admit to having picked upa few of the Minnehaha Medium saddle bags a while back when they were on sale. I always pack a lot, even when I shouldn't, so this bag is a perfect size:
I'm also a big fan of my Carradice Nelson with a bagman support, which can be seen to the far left on my Fuji S12-S LTD touring setup from a Yurt S24O:

Dang. I'm getting a complex now. Well, it was an interim step. I sat down to design and make a leather bag that would fit nicely on that VO rack. And then I remembered that old Dopp kit I had picked up years ago. Still haven't made the custom leather bag.

incazzare.
I use a tool roll like this:
Although I just ordered a Carradice Pendle saddlebag, which I will be using soon. I'll just toss the tool roll (and contents of my pockets, etc) into it:

Doohickie, that looks pretty cool. my only issue with the bike burritos is that they can't really carry anything extra, like a long sleeve layer you've removed on a warm day or an extra snack. I guess some folks put that in their jersey, right?

I use a Rivendell Banana Bag or a copy thereof. I carry at least two, and usually three, spare tubes (I hate patching tubes at the side of the road, although I also carry a patch kit for that belt-and-suspenders security), plus tools, plus CO2 (and yes, I carry a pump, too), plus Nuun tablets to add to my water, plus I have room for arm warmers, leg warmers, and something to eat, if necessary.
Bigbossman likes to tease me about my "steamer trunk," until I pull the tool or whatever out of it that saves his ride.
