Please help me identify a vintage Pinarello
Hi folks,
I recently acquired what I believe to be a late 60's/early 70's Pinarello.
It does not have a serial, only an '58', stamped at the bottom - obviously it's size. It has a sticker with an 1975 date, but I believe it might be a later addition.. The frame itself has no decorations at all, and even lacks holes for the bottle cage. Can it be one of those 'cheap Pinarellos'? Or is it just plain old?
Also, I figure that most of the accessories might be the original too. Most of them are identical to this '74 Pinarello, except for the handlebar, the front derailleur and hubs (which are PIVO, SACHS and Shimano track hubs on mine). Mine's missing the rear derailleur and fork as well..
So, any ideas? Should I be making a restoration on this?
Thanks for any help in advance.
Daniel

The bike doesn't look like any Pinarello I have ever seen. Clearly it is not a post 1975 Pinarello. There are no cutouts in the lugs? The bottom bracket is different than any I have seen and there are no initials in the seatstay caps. The World Championship stripes are also totally inappropriate. I would guess it is a fake. What size is the seat tube? Is the bottom bracket Italian threaded?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
The seatpost is 26.5mm (in kinda bad shape), and it has a Cinelli Unicanitor seat. Haven't taken out the bottom bracket yet, but it's a Campagnolo 36 x 24F, so I guess it's an italian thread. Also, I found a few 60's Pinarellos also missing the cutouts on the lugs.. (e.g. https://www.flickr.com/photos/zagor3/...n/photostream/ ) Yet mine should be younger than '68, judging by the brakes..
Yes I also believe the stripes and stickers are out-of-date..

I can't imagine that someone would rivet on a Pinarello headbadge, but the bike looks like a "gaspipe" frame judging by the pics. The red pinarello is now mine but I bought it as a frame and fork. It does not have the engraving in the seat stay caps but does have the pinarello cutout in some of the lugs etc. It does not have a headbadge.

Where is the bike? Did Pinarello make lower end models for the european market? Lowerend bikes during the bike boom?

Hello,
Vjp,
Are the brakes and derailleurs the factory ones on yours? And why did they leave the head badge off? Crazy Italians
Bianchigirll,
The bike is from Germany or Austria i believe.
MetinUz,
Here's a picture of the dropouts. One of them has a campagnolo engraving..

If the bike is a fake, it's a venerable one (not very likely, in my opinion). An easy way to tell if it's a high-quality tubeset is simply to weigh the frame and fork, bare -- meaning, remove the bottom bracket, seatpost bolt, and the remnant of brake housing along with the top tube clips; that's how I weigh all my frames, leaving in only pressed-in headset races on frame and fork. All the good ones I have weigh somewhere around 3 kg (frame + fork): from 2712 g for a 54 cm Motobécane built with Vitus 172 tubing to 3255 for a 63 cm Serotta built with Columbus SP.
Based on the dropout detail, the brake bridge and the nice long-point lugs, my money says that what you have is indeed a nice bike frame, and probably a Pinarello to boot (but I have no experience with that marque).

I bought the frame and fork from the person who bought it from the site where the pics are posted. It came to him with all the parts but I am not sure if they are original or not. possibly they are because it appears to be a Tre Tubi bike and the build level suits that kind of bike. Pinarello also used a foil "head badge" decal which this probably had but it is gone know (replaced with a shop sticker)

Charles,
The bike weighs 2800g with the bottom bracket in, but without the fork (which i don't have).
Vjp,
Does your frame have a serial number?
Reynolds,
OK, but why would anyone bother making a fake pinarello with presumably authentic parts?

I don't think it's a made on purpose fake Pinarello. Maybe someone had a salvaged Pinarello headbadge (the only part that looks authentic) and put it on a decent-but-no-Pinarello frame. Or maybe, as said above, it's just a lower end Pinarello? But no one seems to have seen one of those.
