Tips for Treating the rust on my 75 raleigh sports

just picked it up over the weekend, better pics can be seen here>

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...Raleigh-Sports

anyway, i was takin the parts off lastnight, and got a better look at the rust on the chainstays,

also of course my cotters are stuck, let me know if you have any tips for removing those too,

the chrome bits are being treated by using aluminum foil, and some vinegar soaking...working great... more worried about the rust on the frame itself under the paint, not really worried about removing it as much as containing it.. thanks

If you already have it stripped down to a bare frame, you can go all-out and give it an Oxalic Acid soak.
You can buy OA at a paint supply store as "deck wash" a pint container of crystals. Search the forum there are already several good threads on the procedure.
If you have lots of vinegar, that works also.
After that, treat the bare spots with touch up paint, or just wax. Or motor oil.

Not to rain on your parade, but a lot of us refer to this
amount of rust on a Raleigh Sports as anti-theft patina.

I'd soak the chrome bits in a weak OA bath and wash the frame down with vinager. The "patina" maybe be more pleasing than a repaint!

Loctite Rust Remedy.
Put it on the rusty surface and wait a bit (around 15 minutes). The rust will turn into a hard black substance, which stops the rust dead in its tracks. Sand it down and apply paint.

They've been using it on Wheeler Dealers for years now, and it seems to work quite well.
I've used it to solve rust problems on my bike's seat tube, near the BB. After 6 months there's still no sign of rust there.

im tempted to leave the rust on the frame, i have all of the chrome parts cleaned up, the rust doesn't look like its spread too much.. plus the root beer color blends it nicely...
