New PDX Bike Shop With Cool Vintage Bikes On Display

I just wanted to let PDX folks know about a new bike shop in town. VeloCult, formerly of San Diego, has moved to The Weird City and alighted in a big cool space on NE 42nd just north of NE Sandy.

The shop is still being set up, but it has a bunch of vintage bikes on display, randonneur stuff for sale, mechanics working, a couple of big tables, a screen where they show the races (Tour De California or Giro is next up), a bar with some good beer. I think Mexican food is coming next. And Bicycle Quarterly for sale.

Did I mention vintage bikes on display? There is a perfectly restored 1961 Rene Herse, a Look Hinault, a wild funny bike, a Yeti Ultimate, actually more stuff than I can remember right now. A veritable museum of cool bikes.

No connection, other than I've bought myself a beer and a couple parts there.

By the way, River City Bicycles has cool vintage bikes on display too.

Apparently they have an online museum too.

This funny bike is on the wall of the shop. Looks wild to ride.

Always a welcome sight to see a shop with a collection or at least a strong nod to the best of the past. Gives the place a bit of soul, wooden floors somewhere in the place helps.

I could use a day in PDX,
busy with visits to classic bike spots
and a coffee&doughnut
and fo' sure a couple beers
in the afternoon.
maybe 2 days?
Oh Yeah.
Trees and the coast
Oh Yeah.

I've bought from them online and met the owner Sky at a bike swap. Very satisfied with their service and selection of cool vintage goodies, esp. framesets. I have family in that area, so this is welcome news to me as well. Seem like great people, with great taste in bikes.

Their first location prior to the South Park (San Diego) one was three doors south of the LBS I worked in back in 1974.

Sooooo....do they sell C&V NOS or used parts too??
Closest thing we have here in the Bay area is SF's "American Cyclery". Folks there had helped me a lot with my project bikes as another source for my NOS and used parts. They don't have a tremedous amount of old stuff to sell, but I've lucked out with many ancilliary items like brake shoe holders, calble guides, NOS waterbottles and such.. and they have their own small museum display of mostly old steel bikes in the shop.
I did notice though that the Velocult needs to add at least one Vitus bicycle in their online museum.

I would love to visit a shop like that. velocult.com/museum/ will have to do for now.
After seeing so many bikes better than my own, I clicked on the vitus bike hoping for something more ordinary, no scratches and super record. Its a very nice collection and a nice way to display it online.

Oh, I guess I was wrong, they do have a Vitus in their online museum after all......
I would say though that the 979 they have in it is a bit unusual as they were rarely equipped with Campy SR gruppos. The more typical components installed on them were Shimano DA7400 and sometimes, 600. It was odd though that Mavic or Spidel was also rarely installed on them too.

River City is a place that any C&V'r should visit if they get to Portland... great shop with some exceptional eye candy hanging from the ceiling.

i didn't care much for the owner (sky), but the staff was great.

if you're like me, you'll probably enjoy looking around the store and then walking out empty handed...

Definitely going to stop in some time and check it out. The bikes on their museum page are incredible.

Also, Voodoo is overrated, but worth a visit for people from out of town.

I like VooDoo Donuts! I ride by it every day from work, and resist, manfully, except when I don't.

River City has a beautiful PX-10 hanging up. I wish it was a little lower, hard to see that much.

Henry III are you moving to PDX like to live? Hmm, maybe we should see about organizing a C & V & beer thing. There must be enough locals. When?

Yeah, a PDX C&V meetup would be a good idea. I really need to get my PX-10 finished and on the road already, it's almost there.
