Schwinn Circuit goes Rando

I've just about finished my winter "fast" commuting rig and thought people might like it.

I found a complete bike in early spring at a swap at a good price. Once I started disassembing everything I figured out why. No grease was used on anything with threads. Not many parts were salvagable and it took a few months of on-again, off-again work, but at least I still had the frameset. The build went smoothly with a modern 9spd build.

Squeezing in fenders, front rack, and 28c tires required some modifications to the rack. Rather than mounting the tang under the fork crown, I bent the tang down and cut off the excess.

I'm waiting to order a decaulleur from VO, so in the mean time I used an old metal reflector bracket bolted to a length of aluminum plate. This unfortunately interferes with the bag closing, however I haven't noticed a problem in mild rain.

Last year I won a pair of these B&M dynamo lights for $15 but they are made for fork crown mounts. I used some rack extensions to build an articulated arm to hold the light in front of the rack. I need to clean up my wiring...

Sheer bike porn!!
Also, I am a lover of sport/racing type bikes for commuting.. The sweet Schwinns are hard to find, and even harder in the right size.. I have been trying to land a black Schwinn Prelude in (86 to 89)in my size. Sheesh, you don't even see any of them out there, futherless in my size.

Again, the Circiut is a treasure.

I've got that same exact frame sitting in my shed that one of those extreme long term projects. A seat post clamp binder bolt this year and then some recessed bolts for calipers which will come the year after. lol. Cool ride.

Sweet, sweet build. That's a perfect commuter, except for that little issue with the bag.

Looks like the racing spirit of that Circuit has done all it can to resist the fenders and rack.

Wrap that headlight wire tighter or secure it w/ some zip ties. You will always catch a loose wire on something when you least expect it.

If you're looking for a tall one like he is, focus on '87 Tempo's. Schwinn made a lot of 25's that year for some reason and they're not hard to find in good condition. In '88 they made a 23, a 24 and a 25 if you're a 'tweener.

23's on the other hand, all seem to congregate at my place. I've got four of them right now, plus a 23" Super Sport (same frame, slightly better fork).

They look like VO Randonneur bars. I have them on several bikes.

Yep, VO supplied the rack, bag, and handlebars. The Gran Compe stem feels heavier than a Nitto, but is very shiny.

I keep thinking I should put some white bar tape on to match the saddle and pay homage to the original color scheme.

Nice build! I used a front reflector mount (and a piece of 2x4, of all things) as a mounting point for my handlebar bag this rando season.
