Look KG96 now in single speed mode
Here is a quick photo of my 1989 Look KG96 after I converted it to SS for early morning summer workouts. I have ridden a number of vintage ish carbon composite bikes, including Trek 2300, Giant, and Specialized. They all seemed to suffer from a little "deadness" in the ride. The Look, however, has a bit of spring to the ride more similar to a C&V steel bike. In other words, it can get up and go.

Thanks Robbie. Given your level of athletic ability, I'm surprised you haven't yet built a single speed.

Fine looking SS! The color scheme is spot on, IMO.

It's a beautiful frame but I can't say I agree with anything you attached to it. To each his own.

It needs a Mavic SSC group! Great looking SS though.

I'd go with a silver Athena 11-speed group, original fork if it exists, Nitto S-83 seatpost, Nitto Pearl steam, black saddle, black tape, silver campy hubs on silver Mavic OPs/CXP33s or something similar and some gumwalls. Of course, that might bust the budget a bit.

Actually, I originally had it set up with a DA 7400 8-speed group with STI's. Given that I have a number of bikes with STIs, I decided I would ride this one much more as a SS.
The original fork does not exist. And it came with the very nice all carbon Look replacement fork. I thought about getting a replacement threaded fork (Nashbar) and using a quill, but since I don't have the original fork, that seemed like sort of wasteful overkill.
Gumwalls, maybe, maybe not.
Why would you go for a Nitto seat post as opposed to the Look carbon?
BTW, stock included a red saddle and white bar tape, as well as red look pedals.
Here is a review with a different color combination.

And here are the 1991 catalog pages.

Interesting. That's really too bad about the fork. I love the Mondrian motif.
I like the simplicity of the Nitto seatpost and I prefer silver components on a black bike. Replace Nitto with any other clean silver seatpost.
That catalog photo makes me lean toward the white tape and red saddle.

very cool, robert. i remember thinking when i saw it that it would be a cool SS. i went out and rode my 46x16 fixie today for the first time in a while, and had a good time. btw, i kept thinking about that ride we did last sunday, with me on the MV Centurion; that was a great ride, and all it would have needed to really fit was a 120mm stem and some 44 bars. great time, even if i did have the bad legs....thanks rob

I love the KG196. As sacrilegious as it is I'd love to have the frame a piece of wall art.
