How to replace gum hoods?
I have a pair of Suntour superbe brake lever's that are calling out for for new gum hoods.
I bought some die compe gran compe hoods as someone said they would fit. I can't figure out an easy way to get these on. Anyone have advice?

+1 on the soapy water. After struggling with this the first time I swapped out (and ruining) a pair, I couldn't believe how much simpler it was to install them with the soap-slickened water.

Talc powder is as good, as well. I put them in a plastic bag with a couple of good shakes of powder and roll the bag around to well cover the hoods. Use a small clean paint brush to whisk away excess. Install. Slick.

I did some recently. Remove the cable. Remove the tower from the handlebar by removing the scew or nut that holds it to the clamp. Cut the old hood away (unless you want to save it). Soap up the inside of the new one and slide it on from the bottom. Re-install the tower and cable.

I glue thin leather over the hoods, so they stay out of the sun, its an opaque layer,
and avoid deterioration from UV.
mine, Modolo ones mostly..

If the levers are already on the bars and taped in place, I have installed them from the front, sliding them over the lever, then quickly past the "point" where the cable exits, and finally sliding into place all the way over the body to the bar.
Honestly, they went right on.
If they are Dia-Compe or Weinmann, where a ferrule sits atop the cable exit hole, that can be stuffed into the cable port on the hood after installation, with the ferrule socketed onto a long 6mm bolt.
The hoods don't seem to get stressed all that much this way, but I spray a bit of rubbing alcohol on the sliding surfaces inside the hood and on the lever/body.
If you want a challenge, it's the effort in putting new hoods onto Shimano STI levers, only they can only go on from the back.

I should mention this, since many are now using the CaneCreek hoods, that these cannot be rolled back as one might want to do while taping the bars. Better to just lift the hoods away with a screwdriver while tucking in the tape as needed (something that also works well with old, dry and cracking hoods that might have high vintage-original prices).
Trying to roll them back, inside-outing them a bit, causes the thicker rubber to split!
Good thing they only set you back $15 then!
But I have had no trouble installing them from the front, with a few drops of rubbing alcohol.

Before I installing a set of NOS Campagnolo hoods on my Paramount someone recommended I warm the hoods up in warm water to soften them up a bit. it worked great for me.

incazzare.
I recall hearing that it was found to cause cancer or something along those lines. I might be remembering incorrectly, though.
