I think I've struck a bargain to pick this bike up today.

Leaving the original wheels on this bike. Got it for $350 which I think is fair.
I can't think of any good reason to try to switch to 700c, I guess more tire choices?

That being said, if you plan on changing wheel size to 700c from 27", you should get a different bike- the brake studs are so close to the rim and have such a small drop that those extra 4 mm are nigh impossible to get the pads straight. I know. I tried. And there are no modern canti's that will fit that I've found.

Got it for $320. Pretty good condition but can't really get the frame to shine up. Replace the handlebars, original were horrible as were the brake levers.
New honey colored Brooks saddle added as well as a hi rise stem. News new tires and new bar tape and I've got to run a rear brake cable. Overall a very
cool bicycle.

Yes, indeed. Very nice bike. Good bargain for a mid-80's Raleigh touring bike. Hope it takes you on some good long tours!

You've got yourself a really decent all-round touring bike there. As I see it the only reason
you might want to go to 700s is to get a wider selection of cross tires should you decide
to go off road. I can't think of a good reason to swap out the freewheel or chainrings; the
6 spd gives all the range you need. It's possible that the spring in the rear derailleur could
be getting a bit limp & the rowels could be worn. If so, you might want to upgrade there.
Personally, I don't much care for down tube shifters, but that's a matter of taste. It's not
hard to convert to stem shifters.

On the off chance that someone in western Washington is interested, this bike is going
for $115 on CL Olympic peninsula. It's an Olympian, essentially the exact same bike as
the Alyeska except it's a 12 speed in stead of an 18. Add a triple chainring, you've
got an Alyeska.

Eeeh... No cantilevers, no mid-fork brazeons, single eyelet up front and I think in back as well, plus the stem shifters and suicide levers. I don't think that's the same frame as the Alyeska (or at least not the most desirable years for it), and not terribly suited for loaded touring IMHO.

Still $115 isn't a bad deal for a 1980s sport-tourer.

Well, a couple of other differences, mostly don't make a difference in the ride, but are a little more convenient for touring- the Alyeska has a MTB derailleur to handle the lower gears and the triple crank, it has more mounting points for racks and water bottles, and cantilever brakes. But a very nice price for a sport-touring model. If I were closer I'd pick it up.
