What Peugot do I have here?




Low end 70’s boom bike I think. Nevar Crank, 12 spd Sachs dr, downtube shifters, Carbolite frame. Made in France decal on left chainstay. Bike is certainly used but not abused. Wheels are surprisingly straight. Paint dull with some scratches but will polish up fairly well.

Got this to flip, but I wanted to grease all the bearings first and ride it a bit, but am I going to run into trouble using my “standard” tools? French threads? For example can I use my Park ccp1 to pull the cranks or do I need something else? Thought it might be worth $50 ready to ride.(bar tape/hoods would be buyers responsibility)

I was also curious about the markings on the handle bar. What do they mean?

I know I’ve covered 3 forums here (mechanics/what’s it worth/c & v) but I thought C & V members could answer all of these questions. Thanks for any info.

I think this is the P-8 which was a replacement for the UO-10; the carbolite tubing was Peugeot's low end tubing set. By the time this bike was made, most of the parts had become fairly standard in terms of threading but I don't remember about the crank threading. I think the other end of the Park should work but someone on this list serv can give you a definite answer. Very fair price for $50; I'd want more if I overhauled the bike. It's a nice riding bike.

Edit: this are probably rigida rims and they might be, if memory serves me, rigida 1622 which were darn good rims (a lot like the Wolber Super Champion 58s). Those made for good wheels.

From the catalogs online the closest match is a PH10 variant in the 85-86 range. Nothing matches 100% but that's my best guess. 85 PH10LE is pretty close except for tubing.

Edit: Does your frame use different tubing then the fork? Your fork might be labeled Carbolite, but there might be a different tubing sticker on the seat tube. The PH10LE has a HLE frame with Carbolite fork.

Down tube shifters make it a PH10.

There's a white paper label on the right side chainstay by your blue stand. What's it say? What's the serial number?

I think threading/sizing was all pretty much French in 1985. That's not a complete disaster; you can still get new or used replacement parts if necessary.

The white sticker is a ratty bike shop sticker....hardly readable. I'll check the frame again for other stickers but I only saw the one on the fork. jettore: thanks for the link.

As for the price, I just enjoy bring old steeds back to life and/or getting them to someone would will ride and enjoy....I have too many as it is.

Yeah, I think they were done transitioning by 1985. I have an '82 or '83 (could be as early as '81) that is halfway there, french steerer but standard BB.

Well that's good news. I've been a little shy of the mid-80's and earlier Pugs, not knowing for sure what they've got for threads/sizes. Helicomatic puts me off a little, too.

Only other label I found....just a logo I think.

Hubs are the dreaded Mallard heliomatic so I guess I would need at least one special tool (which I don't have)

By the way, do those marking on the handle bar shown in the original post have any significance?

It was mostly French threding for pre-85 Peugeots with just a very few upper end models (like the PSV) combining the French with a Swiss BB.
By 85, most, if not all Peugeots were already transitioned to English trheading to accomodate Japanese and Italian made components in a bigger way.

HLE is better than Carbolite.

Cadre Allegre<Carbolite<HLE<501 and then 531/Super Vitus/SLX are all about the same

I'd give you $50.00 for it, finish whatever you don't do and sell it for an easy $200.00 in my market and I price my bikes to sell fast.

Thanks for the compliment, but paint/decals look a lot better in photo then they actually are. I'd be happy with $50 here in central PA as vintage road bikes don't bring much here. I put an extremely nice Giant Allegre on CL a few days ago @$125 and haven't got a single response.

I'd be interested in buying that Peugeot but it looks too big. What size is it? It would be a great match for my Canyon Express in the same color.
