I found out about William Gibson and Cyberpunk in general by playing the Neuromancer video game on my Commodore 64. Awesome game, even awesomer book! Also, you should read Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

I brought this thread back because I just finished an amazing book - "Major Taylor, A Forgotten Legend" by Conrad Kerber with a forward by Greg LeMond.

This is the moving story of the greatest American track cyclist America ever produced, and he happened to be African-American. He competed in the 1890's and early 1900's, a time of extreme prejudice and Jim Crow laws when black athletes were unheard of or accepted. The abuse, prejudice and bodily harm heaped upon this first ever African American world champion are almost to much to be believed, but somehow, with the help of God, he fought through it all with grace and charm. The world knows all about Jackie Robinson, but somehow has never heard of Major Taylor, who was bigger and more popular than Jackie ever would become. How did that happen?

This is a must read IMHO.

I just read a book someone gave me called faster than the speed of love, by Brian Griffin. Never heard of him or the book before but something about it was familiar.

OMG was that a page turner or what? I thought it was a great story about some kid who became a great man. He just died in the last year or so. I am not sure if I want to see the movie, that is a lot of story to condense into one hour and forty seven minutes.

The True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. Good re-telling of the classic outlaw tale, from the point of view of Ned Kelly. Very imaginative and fun to read.

Awesome. I've written an article about another crew on that same olympics (NED M2+).

Also, I started reading Neuromancer, partly because of the recommendations in this thread, it;s a great read.

"Flatbellies" by A.B. Hollingsworth is a pretty good read. Golf drives the story, but it is more of a coming of age book like Stand By Me or The Sandlot movie. It is set in the 60's and does a good job of taking you back in time. Be forewarned, like typical adolescent males, the characters let loose with some profanity from time to time.

I recently read "Wheelmen: Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France, and the Greatest Sports Conspiracy Ever" (by Reed Albergotti and Vanessa O'Connell), and just finished "It's All About the Bike: The Pursuit of Happiness on Two Wheels" (by Robert Penn).

The former might well have soured me on ever reading another biography (unless it was written pre-1970), and the latter would have been ever so much more interesting without the boring history. However, both books were loaned to me by my LPL (local public library), so all it cost me was my time.

As always, YMMV.

Hmm. I read The Bat, which I believe was the introduction of Nesbo's main character, Harry Hole IIRC. I had trouble becoming invested in the book because he wasn't very likeable.

I'm in the middle of The Bat and having a hard time sticking with it. The Son has nothing to do with Harry Hole character. Our library has 3M book download, so it's on my iPad. It stays for 21 days, then it auto returns.

Maybe I'll give it a shot. After reading The Bat I tried reading The Redbreast, another HH novel and supposedly a huge international hit. I got about 1/3 of the way through before giving up. Or maybe the translation just wasn't so great.

+1 "Wheelmen" Centered on Lance Armstrong but all about the age of doping - which apparently we are still in the middle of.
