Bicycle Times did a review and I think it was around $700 for frame fork and eccentric bottom bracket. There is only one US distributor unfortunately. Prairie Wind Cycles or something in the Midwest.

This would be nice if it had shifter bosses.

Singular makes awesome single speed 29er mountain bikes. I almost picked up one of their Ti Pegasus models that are made by an Italian shop, however it was a little to pricey. the Swift and Gryphon are sweet and economical.

Can't be those -- it would be too awkward even if you could figure out how to mount shifters onto them.

Agreed. Those full-length cable braze-ons are nothing short of disgusting - not to mention that the offset rear brake cable routing limits your options of sidepull brakes.

Surly CC with a taller headtube and disc tabs? Seems like it. A few extras but a few things taken away.

Because it has vertical dropouts and if you want to run a single speed setup to solve the chain tension issue. I'm not sold and tired of seeing the "do it all" frames every company or builder are building.

I'm sure there are other options from other builders but this one stood out for me. The full length cable housing is nice if you're going to ride in the rain, mud or other lousy weather.

Why the dislike for a "do everything bike"? I guess I'm getting a little bored w having a bunch of bikes and would like to consolidate into 3-4 road ish bikes plus my 2 dedicated mtbs. Something like this could fill multiple niches and disc brakes are fantastic

This. Surly seems to have mastered the "jack of all trades" frames with the Cross Check, Troll, and Ogre, which are all steel and reasonably priced. When the framesets get over ~$700 like the Singular, you can (probably) afford a purpose built bike that'll do better at any one thing the cheaper bikes can do.

That's their cyclocross bike. I don't think you'll find anyone racing cross using downtube shifters.

I think the "do it all" description has more to do with riding it than building it up with different types of brakes or other components.

They just look too cluttered. Makes me think of crossover type vehicles which I absolutely despise. I also despise all of the Surley and the rest of the QBP brands. I always feel like Dana Carvey as the grumpy old man on SNL on new bike design.

Bikes can't do it all. Period. Compromised designs just don't do it for me. I'd rather buy a cheap roadie and a cheap MTB, upgrade it with some careful shopping then have a jack of all trades mongrel that is nowhere a pleasure to ride.

Depends on how the geometry is I suppose. More I look at it I can see more positives. Disc is fine and really there's no need for any other brake options after you go disc. It does mean though that my collection of rim brake wheels would be useless, but if I had several disc wheelsets I can see it being easy.

If it was Ti then it'd really do it all since itd be lighter and still supple.

Not sure about the BB though, more complexity there and could be a real pain to deal with on the road if there's an issue. A sliding rear dropout system may be better... or, what's wrong with long dropouts or just running a tensioner (other than vanity)?

If I run into a few well priced options I'm going to get a disc fork for my Cross Check and a front wheel. Gets me 90% there.

I have one of those (I think that's what you call it anyhow). I've found it pretty useful.

They've put a lot of people on bikes and that's a good thing in my book.

Anymore I just want to ride, anywhere, over varying terrain etc. my International has seen single track but I felt bad about that.

I agree Col, QBP etc HAS gotten lots of people out on bikes and that is what really counts

There is no E in Surly. I will now have to crush your soul with my Surly Pugsley. Sorry Henry.

There is certainly a new niche being made, and many new makers coming out making great (Taiwan built) bikes for those of us who want the classic look/build options but can't afford a Waterford/Rivendell/Vanilla/etc. Ocean Air Cycles, Rawland, Singular, and so forth all seem to cater to those in this "in between" financial status between QBP and Waterford.
