Can Someone ID this "Brazing" Method? - Peugeot PH501

My friend's mid-80's Peugeot PH501 downtube shifter "braze-on" decided to pop off today...luckily not while riding. I'd like to take care of it, considering I sold him the bike when it didn't fit me.
I'm trying to figure out how this braze-on was attached--glued, riveted, brazed, soldered, etc. I can't tell if the little pin is a rivet or part of a rod that runs through the DT to hold the posts in place while the adhesive sets. The shifters are Sachs-Huret...I'll have to disassemble them to figure out if it's the oldschool Huret-specific kind or Campy/Simplex-style. Don't know my Huret history. I have access to industrial epoxy, a local framebuilder ($$$) that'll braze stuff on, a hacksaw, and clamp-on shifters. I've also seen unmodified Huret DT clamps on eBay for about $5. Any suggestions on what combination of the above would be the best compromise of money & function? Aesthetically, he'd prefer not to have a clamp, but it's not a dealbreaker. That looks very much like a "spot weld" and tends to not be all that strong, in my opinion.

I think every Peugeot U08 I've ever seen has spot weld welded "braze ons" -- Peugeot is a car company after all.

Could be easily reattached with silver solder (it would never fall of again, even if you hit it with a hammer) but you would lose a little paint near the repair. With some cool gel and or wet rags you probably wouldn't damge the decals. The framebuilder is probably the best bet if you can't do it yourself and don't want a clamp on shifter.

But yes, it's a double spot welded 'braze-on'. Your best option is to use band style shifters. |
I would cautiously try to remove the other mount and just use a clamp on style mount. That way you can save the paint over trying to braze on a new mount.

I'll try to pull off the other side with some pliers, but it was probably used significantly less, so it might be a bit more difficult.
I'll probably give him my Suntour power shifters, so this will be a net upgrade for him. |
I've seen a bunch of single-sided clamp on DT shifter mounts, they seem common on frames that were made for 1x5 setups that ended up being 2x10 setups later in life, or something along those lines. I'd be inclined to use some stainless rivets and drill out the spot welds if the "braze-on" is still intact and has enough meat on it.
