Trying to figure out Peugeot seatpost size for Ebay seller

EDIT: Er, I meant buyer... I'm the seller... can't figure out how to change the title of this post!

Hi all:

I posted a JPR 24mm seatpost on the 'Bay; it fit my wife's late (wrecked) '86 Iseran perfectly, which had Carbolite 103 tubing. I got the following question from an Ebay buyer:

"I have a carbolite 103 frame and the seatpost size is 23.4 mm....do u know if this will fit it? Is it 24mm exactly?"

I don't own a set of calipers, but as I measure it the post diameter seems to be 24mm, pretty close. I've never heard of a 23.4mm seatpost. What do I tell this person? Do you think it will fit?

Thanks for any clarification!

Roy

There's a bit of a discrepancy about this fact. A number of Carbolite 103 and HLE frames have been identified on this forum as having 24.0 seatposts; yet, there's an ancient claim on Sheldon Brown's site that suggests that Carbolite 103 frames are 23.4mm.

There's a recent aftermarket post made by Decathlon in the 23.4mm size (supplied with shims), but I've yet to figure out where the 23.4 size originated.

The question is which is correct, or on what models one or the other were used, or whether the clamp design on these things are imprecise enough to allow for the mounting of either size (doubt it). My bet is that 24.0mm is the correct size for all 103/HLE frames, and that the existence of the modern 23.4mm post is due to some Chinese marketing team reading the information off of Sheldon's site.

My bet is that someone inaccurately measured a 24.0mm post and submitted the information to Sheldon - in short, a 23.4mm post never actually existed until now. In fact, the only people actively fanning the flames about the 23.4's appear to be the hipster chavs at www.lfgss.com.

It's not your problem. If it measures 24.0 it's 24.0. Revise your ad to sate 'it's the buyers responsibility to make sure this post fits the buyers frame.'

+1 to this when it comes to eBay sales. Working out an explanation amongst BF members in the Sales forum is one thing, but on eBay, a "do you know if it will fit"-type question will be used so the buyer can cheat the seller out of the item after they've received it. Applies to mounting hardware as well.

Ideally, your reply to the buyer should be "It's a 24.0mm post. Purchase at your own risk."

Good advice.

I usually only sell seat posts which state the size on the post, that way there's no confusion.
