@Chrome Molly's ride report (75 miles with 4k ft climbing) got me motivated to do a ride report for a ride @gerv and I just did through the Iowa Alps. We rode 54 miles on the MUP that runs from Des Moines to Big Creek State Park. I have no idea how many feet of climbing we did but it sure as heck was a lot less than 4,000 ft! There's a halfway decent climb up to the Saylorville Dam which we did twice. Gerv kept threatening to do it in his big chain ring but it's actually pretty steep. Got to the top of the ride at Big Creek where a little store has ice cream and cold gatorade. The ride has a lot of rollers, great tree cover to beat the heat, and darn good views for almost the entire trip. It's pretty cool having a MUP like this to get a 50 mile ride in.

There was a MUP alongside the road, and I elected to turn around when it ended, in case I needed a Plan B.
Soaking wet, shoes, gloves, etc. Thank goodness I rode carbon, no sweat or salt air issues.
I've gone faster on rides with hills, at 3x the distance.

Riding at the coast is so different.
Glad to be back, but it's 99 degrees today and tomorrow.
Olympic distance triathlon next Saturday, 28-mile bike leg, then another long week, get ready to drive north to the Dare.

My ride this weekend was a loop near a friend's cabin near Alma, WI in Buffalo county. Its hilly. The last stretch is county S, which is only about 5 miles long. But it has a headwall near the end that is longer and steeper than the one in Governor Dodge SP; the only way I've been able to go up it is by zig-zagging up the hill despite my low gear of 18 gear inches...

OH NO, just the stinkin' hot in this humidity. I'm out of excuses. Same old loop, little 'speed bumps' el. gain but this time on much newer 33 year old bike. Looking tired, duct tape on the chainstays, bar wrap shredding, Tufo's getting thin.... avg. only went up to 15.8 mph.... LOL

@bikemig, the ride we do to Maffit Lake has 1,100 feet of climbing. Today's ride seems much more. You could always extrapolate from the degrees of aching in your quadraceps tonight. Nice photos. Is the red Hetchins mine?

But I'm not uploading our average speed. Looking at some of the average speeds posted on this thread, I don't think we're going to be able to hold our own until it comes to the beer drinking part of the ride . . .

Posting the weekly thread bump early this week as I have the day off. Wanted to mix it up, so I did a 53 mile gravel ride on the Croll drop bar MTB. 4531 of climb per map my ride. Not quite as fast on the Croll as on the cross bike (13.8mph vs 14.1mph), but with better gearing for the hills I was much less tired at the end. This ride has a DD like profile with lots of rollers and several long climbs that end with steeper kickers.
Minnesota rolling farm country (similar to the DD but unpaved)
Some "minimum maintenance roads", aka farm lanes...
This morning's traffic was hectic...
A stop before one of the steeper hills (curls around the hill then goes up the side). One of a couple little/big climbs this ride has to offer.
This is the last hill of the ride. Not my photo, but it captures the spirit of it. This isn't even the steepest part of the hill, ugh.
After the ride, the Croll was ready for more. Me, not so much.

Today I took an extended 2 hour lunch break ride. Same 30.8 m. loop / 1027 el. gain / nominal winds, but this time had longer wait times at intersections.
Though admit not going all out, I was on the beater 60's Italian gas pipe with all the steel parts, 52t only and 13-18 to work with. With this set-up, for sure a few honkers but........ avg. speed notched up to 16.1 mph. What the heck? Maybe its the replacement circa late 50's Stronglight 45 'Competition' steel cottered crank.... lol. (I pulled the original steel crank.... free to anyone who wants the junk.) Gonna light up a Garcia Vega and ponder.

Beautiful ride @Pete...what is your plan for the Dare distance wise? I did 150 over the weekend (75 each day). Beautiful ride up Lake Michigan Shores. Very flat over 75 miles day 1 was just over 1600ft. On day 2 just over 1800 but the head wind was nasty....more DD like

I may elect the 100K so I can loop back and pick up my cousin, riding her first metric century, on a bike I built for her.
She helped us out a lot last time I was home for the Dare, so I owe it to her. I'd still prefer the 150.

No Sunday for me. I am going to go for the 200 this year. Did that 2 years ago but 150 last year. I will see what I am up for but 150 for sure. Going for unable to walk right on Sunday.

Almost seem's everyday we get a good thunderstorm, fun trying to dodge them and get a ride in.
I'm gaining confidence for a bike knocking on 60 years old. Hesitant to say but think to finally have it dialed in. For my daily routine 30 mile loop, only using three of the four cogs (15-21t) and range 74 to 94 inch. Spinning out sometimes but thats just fine. Safely governs speed..lol.
For the old bike, my 30.5 mile loop's with speed bump elevation gain of 1017 ft., low wind days, I'll average 15.7 mph. Could step it up but I'm more conservative and playing safe. Cottered aluminum crank baby! Plus on some of those grades at the DD, most certainly will need my lowest 54 in.
